Austinville Fifth Grade Student Named Gatorade Ad Winner in Decatur Daily Contest
Art teacher, Mrs. Beth Young and Mrs. Bridgett Hayes, writing instructor teamed up as their students participated in the Decatur Daily's Design an Ad competition. Fourth and fifth grade students enjoyed designing an ad to promote the 50th Anniversary for Gatorade. It was an excellent opportunity to teach students about another form of writing. Many of Austinville's students play sports, particularly soccer and are familiar with the Gatorade drink. The obstacle was helping students understand the use of "catchy phrases" as well as artwork that would capture the eye of newspaper readers. Austinville is very proud of its ad winner; fifth grader, Fernando Isidoro Neri. He and his family will attend the Design an Ad Awards Banquet presented by the Decatur Daily on April 27 at Calhoun.
Austinville Celebrates Earth Day by Being Good Stewards
From Pre-K to fifth grade, Austinville students joined together to promote Earth Day in a celebration of cleaning and caring for the campus. Mrs. Vermeire's kindergarten class took to the playground with a garbage can to police for litter. Earth Day writings and drawings were done by second through fifth grades. Second grade classes tended their front tulip bed since frequent rain has encouraged weeds. They were joined by other Austinville students to prepare the Outdoor Classroom raised beds for planting in the coming weeks. Fourth and fifth grade science instructor, Mrs. Wendy Hamilton's Tuesday night homework called for suitable clothing and gloves for Wednesday's work. Students enjoyed their outdoor science class and left with a sense of accomplishment. Even Ms. Hales designated Earth Day as "jeans day" for teachers in a celebration of cotton products as one of Alabama's resources. Most students and teachers agree that we should treat our planet as Earth Day every day!
Heart and "Sole" for Orphaned Children in Haiti
Mr. Harry Hames visited Austinville in November and presented a free magic show for students. He spoke of his trips to Haiti to help the children that have been called "Harry's Kid's." Obviously student council members were listening to his descriptions of the plight of these Haitian children. Student Council members have decided to engage Austinville students in a service project before the close of this school year. This group has taken the initiative to collect flip flops for orphaned children in Haiti. The drive will end Friday, May 15.

According to the office, over thirty parents were here to enroll students in kindergarten. Volunteers, aides and several teachers assisted the office during the two day registration. Parents may continue to enroll kindergarten students throughout the summer during regular office hours.

Third Graders Have First Violin Lesson
Mr. Jacob Frank, conductor of the Decatur Youth Orchestra began the first of ten violin lessons with Austinville's third grade students this week. Students appeared eager and didn't seem to mind their first lesson was using makeshift instruments constructed of boxes and paint sticks. This technique helps students understand how fragile the real instruments are and teaches them to treat their violins with care. Their recital has been scheduled for May 13.
