October Update
The Excitement in Second Grade
Second grade students participated in a community service project with a focus on community helpers and volunteers. They have been studying community helpers in Social Studies and were able to incorporate writing skills by developing friendly thank you letters to the volunteer firefighters. Students brought in donations and assembled baskets of treats for each local fire company. The baskets and letters were presented to each department (Leechburg, West Leechburg, Gilpin) when they visited the elementary school for a fire safety presentation.
The second grade classes are also in the process of writing friendly letters to pen pals to the second grade classrooms at Tenth Street Elementary School in the Riverview School District. We are planning to correspond with our Riverview pen pals about once a month.
LAHS Marching Band
Music Success Stories
1. Our Blue Devil Marching Band placed first at the PIMBA competition on Saturday October 8th, hosted by Deer Lakes. In addition to winning first place in class A our band also won High General Effect and High Music captions. The show is inspired by a mathematical equation developed by astrophysicist Dr. Frank Drake. The final competition will be on Saturday, October 29th at Moon High School.
2. Mr. Reams and Mrs. Hook are proud to announce that thirty-eight fourth graders started playing instruments this fall and are preparing for their debut concert in May! They have a lesson once per week and are doing an amazing job!
Field Trip to Fort Ligonier
The Leechburg Area Ninth Grade students toured Fort Ligonier and its museum on October 5, 2016 under the supervision of Scott Hooks, Frank Komar, and Matt Barczykowski. During the field trip our students were exposed to a French and Indian War fortification that played a vital role in the capture of Fort Duquesne on November 25, 1758. While touring the reconstructed historical site, students were given a first-hand experience of the life of soldiers and officers in a French and Indian War fort. Students visited places inside and outside the fortress such as the officers’ mess, barracks, commissary, officers’ quarters, hospital, quartermaster, and General Forbes’ hut. Inside the museum, students examined numerous items such as the 13 original paintings of 18th century leaders and the rare George Washington collection which featured the future first president’s pistols. Due to an EITC Grant donation, student admission to Fort Ligonier was free. Based on this on site experience, students completed an essay which utilized reading, writing, and thinking skills.
