Feature Story - Carlos Tiemann-Daniel
If you haven't noticed by now, we have a member of our Maroon Band also starting on the Austin High Varsity Football Team. His name is Carlos Tiemann-Daniel. We visited with Carlos to get to know him better and to ask him how he does it! Here is what we found out.
What motivates you to do both football and marching band?
Both are really fun. Band is my laid back relaxing sport and football is much more intense. They basically balance me.
Do you have a nickname?
Los
How do you relax?
I go home, lounge on the couch and watch TV or play video games.
What is your favorite food?
Orange chicken with brown rice from Panda Express.
Who is your biggest supporter?
My parents are my biggest supporters. Even though they would like me to concentrate more on band, they are huge supporters in my football playing too.
What's the best piece of advice you could give someone considering doing multiple sports?
Stick with it. Its kind of challenging at first but don't give up. When I found out that I made the varsity team at the end of last season, I knew I wanted to do both band and football. Knowing this I was able to get a jump on organizing my class schedule.
Do you plan to do other sports at Austin High?
Yes, I plan to participate in track and do relays, sprints and the long jump.
If you had to choose one sport over the other, what would you choose and why?
It various back and forth as I have good days and bad days. I can't pick one. I enjoy doing both.
What is more difficult, band or football?
Football is definitely more demanding on my body. I am the starting safety for the team so I have to be in good physical shape.
Where do you see yourself after graduation?
Going to college and playing football.
We also asked Coach Rosenthal what makes Carlos so special to the football team and here is what he had to say, " I think Carlos is special because he will not accept no for an answer. He is really passionate about band and football, so he was going to do everything he could to make the schedule work. I think it is a credit to his work ethic that he is able to do both and keep his grades up. Tuesday's are his longest days as he has football practice in the morning and then band after school, but he doesn't complain about it at all."
Mr. Frock commented that he and Coach Rosenthal have a great working relationship which makes this all work. They were both on board with Carlos doing both and believe he is a great representation of Austin High.
If there is anyone out there wanting to do more than one sport, just look at what Carlos has accomplished. At Austin High, students are encouraged to do as many activities as possible. There is plenty of time in the day to do multiple activities if they are willing to put the work in.
So during the next Austin High football game be cheering for #23 on defense AND as you watch the Maroon Band, look for Carlos in his football jersey during the halftime show. You too will be amazed.
