CMMS Staff,
Thank you for a great week of learning for students and staff! Below is very important information for your week, thank you for your time and attention reading through the entire weekly email.
A Few Important Items...
*Our School Board members will be visiting us for our staff meeting afterschool on Monday, they want to hear your thoughts and ideas about how things are going at CMMS and BSD. Please arrive on time to our staff meeting @ 1:55 PM in the Library.
*Please make sure you are on time to your supervision areas in the mornings, safety is our first priority and students need to be supervised.
*On 10/17 at 10:17 we will have the Great Shakeout Earthquake Drill. Make sure you review your emergency flip chart on proper steps to take in an Earthquake.
*Please take the time to read through the article below on the need to screen for childhood trauma from California's Surgeon General, you will recognize her from our ACEs training.
*Unfortunately, due to a variety of logistics, we will not be able to have our Trunk-or-Treat event this year. We will look into other options this year, and hopefully plan for that event for next year.
*Paul invited all staff to view the Restorative Activities detention course so you can see the various modules students must complete based on their behavior infractions, this is just an FYI, no action required.

Instructional Strategy of the Week:
Bluffarama or the Bluffing Game for ALL SUBJECT AREAS
This strategy involves students in reviewing information from a previous lesson, unit or reading. It is great as an activity to get all students involved in a competitive spirit with some movement. It is great for when you need to shake things up a bit or have a few minutes at the end of a lesson and want to make good use of the time.
Here's How It Works:
-
Divide the class into two teams and determine which team will begin. That team will be referred to as team A.
-
Teacher asks Team A the question. Example – Who can name the proper steps to solve a linear equation?
-
Any student who knows the answer should stand up. A student who is on Team A and wants to bluff (pretend to know the answer) can also stand up. Give them about 10 seconds to decide and then use a bell or signal to freeze. Not setting a time limit and signal to freeze sometimes causes students to pop up and down making it difficult to determine their intent.
-
A member of the opposing team, Team B, chooses one of the students standing on Team A to answer the question.
-
If the chosen student answers correctly, Team A gets the number of points equal to the number of students standing.
-
If the chosen student answers incorrectly, Team A loses the number of points equal to the number of students standing.
-
All Team A students sit and the teacher then asks a question to Team B.
-
Students on Team B stand if they know the answer or want to bluff and the process repeats.
-
You may want include a rule that the same student cannot be called on two times in a row.
Other Uses:
-
The teacher can randomly choose a student who is standing to answer the question instead of having an opponent do it.
-
Have students create the questions prior to day that you are playing the game or have students in one class create the questions for students in another class.

Second Step Lesson Themes of the Week
6th Grade: Can Personalities Change?
Research shows that believing their own and other people’s personalities are malleable and can change makes a big difference in how students manage the social challenges of middle school. Students who believe personalities can change are less likely to feel bad about themselves and less likely to seek revenge when they have social difficulties with other students.
7th Grade: Personalities Change
Research shows that believing their own and other people’s personalities are malleable makes a big difference in how students manage the social challenges of middle school. Students who believe personalities can change are less likely to feel bad about themselves and less likely to seek revenge when they have social difficulties with other students.
8th Grade: Overcoming Failure
Making mistakes and failing can cause students to feel discouraged and unwilling to try again. The goal of this lesson is to motivate students to overcome failure by maintaining a clear vision of what they want to accomplish, learning from their mistakes, and using good strategies.
