Positive Student Recognition
October Terrific Tigers

2019-2020 PBiS Goal
Our overall goal is to have 85% or more of our kids receive one or fewer minor/major behavior referrals this school year. As of November 1, 2019 448 out of out 464 students have received one or fewer behavior referrals for discipline. That means that 97% of our students at Maplewood Elementary were consistently doing the right thing! Our students are making great choices and learning quickly to avoid repeating bad ones.
Quarter 1 Student Recognition Assembly
Third Trimester Student Recognition
Maplewood Elementary recognized student accomplishments that occurred during the first quarter on Friday, November 8, 2019. 213 students were recognized from across grades K-6 for demonstrating PAWSOME learning behaviors and another 92 students were recognized from across grades K-6 for having PERFECT ATTENDANCE! Students who were recognized during the assembly for contributing so positively to our school community will be put into a random drawing for either MES ear buds donated by our fabulous PTO, tokens to The Rink in Titusville donated by the wonderful Cauvel family who own and operate that establishment or a grand prize of a Kindle Fire donated generously by Sean Battin of Horace Mann.Winners will be announced on Monday, November 11, 2019!

*Sign the VIP wall
*Call home
*Selfie with Mrs. Fonzo
*Ring the bell
*Loud cheering and high fives
*Names read weekly over intercom
Keep up the great work, MES!
Why PBiS?
Frequently, the question is asked, "Why should I have to teach kids to be good? They already know what they are supposed to do. Why can I not just expect good behavior?"
In the past, school-wide discipline has focused mainly on reacting to specific student misbehavior by implementing punishment-based strategies including reprimands, loss of privileges, office referrals, suspensions, and expulsions. Research has shown that the implementation of punishment, especially when it is used inconsistently and in the absence of other positive strategies, is ineffective. Introducing, modeling, and reinforcing positive social behavior is an important step of a student's educational experience. Teaching behavioral expectations and rewarding students for following them is a much more positive approach than waiting for misbehavior to occur before responding. The purpose of school-wide PBIS is to establish a climate in which appropriate behavior is the norm.
