Year 5 Weekly Update

Friday 12th December 2014

Week 15

This week was our final pitch session. Over the past 6 weeks the children have been working in groups to devise and develop their own games to teach their Year 1 buddies. Some classes have already shared their games with their Year 1 buddies and some will be sharing next week.

As this is the final weekly update before the holidays, we hope you all have a wonderful and restful Christmas break!

Golden book

This week the golden book award winners were:

Christmas Party!

Next Wednesday, 17th December, Year 5 will be celebrating the end of term with a Christmas party. The children will be watching a Christmas movie, playing party games and having a shared buffet lunch. They can wear casual clothes on this day. You should have already received a letter with the food that your child has volunteered to bring in to share. Please make sure this food is brought in on Wednesday morning in a named, reusable container.

Please note, all Deli Fresh orders for Wednesday have already been cancelled.

Secret Santa

In the Christmas tradition of gift giving, Year 5 will be taking part in a Secret Santa gift exchange. Your child has brought home the name of a classmate, chosen at random. Your child should bring in a gift for that person next week, Tuesday at the latest. If your child is leaving earlier, please make sure they bring it on Monday. They may be receiving their gift after the holidays. Please make sure the gift is gift wrapped and labelled with the recipients name - not your child's name!

We've had an exciting Maths-Sports week and the children have enjoyed various challenges around the school including basketball shooting and an Olympic sprinter challenge. In class the year 5's have been working out the perimter and area of the playground using only a piece of string! Ask you child(ren) about this challenge.

Homework this week

As your children are now in the upper school, they are expected to be completing 30-45 minutes of homework each night. This will be made up of: approx 15-20 minutes reading with an adult, 10-15 spelling work, and their weekly assigned task.

This week's homework:

The children have been set an extended homework, due in after the Christmas holidays. We would like all students to write an entry for the Hong Kong Young Writers Awards. Our head of English at Beacon Hill, Ms Jeves, will be coming to speak to the children on Monday about the details of the competition. Over the weekend we would like the children to look at the website linked below to begin thinking/planning some ideas.
