We are happy and excited to welcome you and your child(ren) to the 22-23 school year. Our first day of school is August 11. We know this is going to be a terrific year!

Children may be dropped off as early at 7:45. However, children will be expected to sit in the hallway until they enter the classroom at 8:10. Although children may read books and visit with their friends, this is still a long time for children. The best arrival time is closer to 7:55-8:05 am. This will give children plenty of time to visit with their friends and still be ready to enter their classroom by 8:10.

We will host new family school tours on August 4 at 10:00 am and 5:00 pm. The tour will last about one hour. We will gladly answer any questions you may have about Edgelea. This will be a great opportunity for new families to learn about Edgelea and to connect with other new families as well. Parents will learn about volunteer opportunities and extra curriculuar events offered at Edgelea, Students will have a chance to see their classrrom, learn how the cafeteria works, and meet new friends. Our last station will be a tour of our school playground. We encourage parents, if time allows to stay and visit with each other and to let the kids play on the playground with their new friends.

The first day of kindergarten can sometimes be a difficult transition for children. In order to help the transition be as smooth as possible, we ask that you follow the car rider procedures, even on the first day. We will have plenty of extra help and kindergarten staff ready to get your child safely to their classroom on the first day of school. If you’d like to practice getting your kindergartner to their classroom, join us for our Open House on August 9th at 6:00 pm.

Remember:

· Drop off at door 9. between 8:05-8:15.

· We will assist your child out of the car and help them to the line with their kindergarten teacher.

· Kindergarten teachers will walk their class into the building together as a group at 8:15. If you are running late, don't worry, we will have plenty of helpers and we will make sure your child gets to his/her classroom just fine.

· Please do not exit your car, or walk your child into the building. We know this will be a difficult day for some of our children and our parents, too. However, we have found that children do better when you explain to them exactly what to expect ahead of time. The children will feel better because they are actually "leaving you" as they exit the car. You are not the one "leaving them". I promise you, we will love your children and make them feel safe and welcome! We want your children to start their school career in a positive, loving, and caring environment.

We will welcome all families to Edgelea to meet the teachers on Tuesday, August 9, 2022. We will post the classroom teachers' names in the windows earlier that day. We will offer two sessions, exactly the same at 6:00 pm and 6:40 pm. Please come to the time that is most convenient for you. If you have two children at Edgelea, you can attend both sessions. If you have three or more, you will have to divide and conquer. In addition, please feel free to stop by special's teachers, Chinese, Special Education, nurse Ashley Sainer, Counselor Beth Armstrong, and the front office. · All students, who are car riders, will be dropped off in the west parking lot. Parents should remain in their cars and circle around the parking lot. (Yes, even on day 1) Students may enter door 7 or door 9. All kindergarten students should be dropped off at door 9 as this is close proximity to the kindergarten classrooms.

· Parents PLEASE remain in your cars and PLEASE drive through the drop-off line. Once everyone is in the routine and procedures are followed, it will go very quickly. It is EXTREMELY dangerous to walk your child through the parking lot with so many moving cars.

· Children may be dropped off as early at 7:45. However, children will be expected to sit in the hallway until they enter the classroom at 8:10. This is a long time for children. The best arrival time is closer 7:55-8:05 am. This will give children plenty of time to walk to their classroom and to be ready to enter their classroom by 8:10.

· All children will be provided an optional free breakfast (usually a breakfast bar, milk, and a fruit). Children will eat breakfast from 8:10-8:25.

· The official tardy bell rings at 8:25 and our instructional/academic day begins. Children who are running in the building at 8:23 do not have time to get settled or to eat breakfast. Again, the best time for drop off is between 7:55-8:05.

· Door 1 will be open for our walkers. Walkers may actually enter doors 1, 7, or 9. There will be a crossing guard at the corner of Beck and Meadow and at the corner of Davis and Beck. This is the same as last year.

We have plenty of car tags for all of your car windows and other relatives that might be picking up your child.

· Parents PLEASE do not attempt to park in the front parking lot and pick up your child. If your child is a “WALKER”, they should walk off of school property. If you want to pick your child up somewhere off of school property, that is up to you. If your child is actually a car rider, we ask that you follow the car rider procedures and pick your child up in the car rider line.

· We know the car rider line is a bit overwhelming, especially the first few days. It will be slow due to new families and new students. However, we will become very proficient and we are usually able to complete the entire dismissal process by 2:55 or 3:00 pm at the latest. Please be patient and follow the dismissal procedures.

· Walkers will be dismissed from door 1. We will have staff available to cross student walkers through the parking lot. Crossing guards will be available at 18th and Beck, Meadow and Beck, and Davis Dr. and Beck during dismissal until 2:55 pm. Again, if your child is signed up to be a walker, they should walk off of school property before entering your car.

· As you all are aware, in 2020, the state enacted the hands-free law. Indiana law prohibits drivers from holding mobile devices, such as smartphones and tablets, in their hands while driving to reduce distracted driving and improve safety. It is especially important to follow this law in our school parking lots as we work to dismiss 460 children safely.

· We understand that plans and schedules change and if you need to deviate from the normal dismissal for your child, please call the front office by 2:00 pm and let us know. We will make sure your child and your child’s teacher knows the plan. Please do not just tell your child. All children will follow the normal plan UNLESS we hear from you directly. This is to avoid confusion and miscommunication.

Lafayette School Corporation has scheduled three eLearning days for elementary students. The purpose is for students and staff to practice just in case the unthinkable would happen and we would have to close school for an extended length of time. It's My Closet is free and open to Lafayette School Corporation families. This is truly Lafayette families helping other families. You may donate gently used clothing for children and adults as well as house hold items. The donated items are given away free to other Lafayette families. There is absolutely no cost to our families. It's My Closet also receives lots of brand new items from local retailers. Please check it out! You won't be disappointed. Read below to learn more!

WHO CAN SHOP AT IT’S MY CLOSET?

Any family with a child who attends a school in Lafayette School Corporation can shop at It’s My Closet for 30 minutes ONE time in a month. ONE parent/guardian and one child or ONE high school student may shop for the entire family.

WHERE IS IT’S MY CLOSET LOCATED?

It’s My Closet is located in 2 portables behind the old Durgan Elementary School which is on the corner of 18th Street and Hiatt Drive, across the street from Jefferson High School. If you drive down the street like you are headed to the old YMCA, then turn in to the right behind the chain-link fence; we are back by the playground in two portables.

WHEN CAN I SHOP AT IT’S MY CLOSET?

An LSC student’s parent/guardian may shop on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, or Thursdays for 30 minutes between 3:30-5:00 or Saturdays between 10-1. The parent/guardian must bring the Jefferson and Oakland school ID or the K-8 students’ It’s My Closet ID. Families can shop only one time in a month. Be sure to check the calendar for open dates.

MAY I BRING MY CHILDREN TO SHOP WITH ME?

One child may shop with the parent/guardian. However, the parent/guardian may shop for all the children and any other family members who live with the child.

HOW DO I GET AN IT’S MY CLOSET ID FOR MY CHILD?

It’s My Closet IDs are issued the first time the family shops at the store. IDs are issued for each family who has a child who attends a Lafayette School Corporation school. Bring any letter or email from the school to register for shopping. Parents should keep the It’s My Closet ID so it doesn’t get lost.

WHAT IF I LOSE MY CHILD’S IT’S MY CLOSET ID?

It’s My Closet IDs are replaced one time during the school year. If the ID is lost again, the family can no longer shop at It’s My Closet.

WHAT ITEMS ARE AVAILABLE AT IT’S MY CLOSET?

One never knows what is available because It’s My Closet depends on donations. It’s My Closet may have clothes (newborn to adult), kitchen items, books, winter coats and other winter clothing, shoes, purses, suitcases, baskets, and jackets. However, all of these items may not be available each day.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO SHOP AT IT’S MY CLOSET?

All items are free with the exception of new jewelry that costs 25¢. Funds from the jewelry sales are used to purchase items for the store.

All Edgelea students should spend 20 minutes a night either reading or being read to...or a combination. PLEASE MAKE SURE YOUR CHILD IS READING 20 MINUTES NIGHTLY!

Please continue to encourage your child to read ALL SUMMER long. It makes a HUGE difference in their reading skills/levels. Consider visiting the Edgelea library and the public library. Children love books and it is a FREE activity. Show your children that you love books, too. It is a "life-changer" but the time to start is NOW. Often parents wonder, "what can I do to help my child succeed?" This is the answer. Read to your children. Have them read. Share the love of reading with them. It makes school and learning so much easier and enjoyable. Set them up for SUCCESS!
