Capturing Kids' Hearts October Theme - Self-direct
Self-Direction is the ability and learned skill to cast a vision of future goals and then take intentional steps toward who, where, and what we want to be.
Instead of focusing on things to control or avoid, we emphasize our responsibility to make positive choices related to our emotions, attitudes, and actions.
Student Led Conferences
We are so excited to bring Student Led Conferences to Mulvane Middle School. Students will be calling home this week to schedule conferences. If you are not able to answer the phone or miss the phone call, please call the front office and we will be able to get your conference scheduled for you!
We have had a lot of questions about what this might look like. Please remember the conference times are by appointment only and your student must be present with you.
For example:
- Your 15-minute student-led conference would be from 4:00 - 4:15. This would be with your student and their advisement teacher. In the next 20 min, 4:15 - 4:35, you will have time to speak with your student's other teachers if you wish.
- 4:35 - 4:50, the next round of Student-Led Conference begins.
During conferences, our library will be open and we will have our Library/tech paras available to help answer any questions about Google Classrooms, Skyward, Chromebooks, or any tech question you may have.
Here is a video highlighting the benefits and process of student-led conferences as shared by another school district. This is an example of a student-led conference after one year, we are just starting our implementation this fall.

Chromebook
For the best learning environment, students need to have their Chromebooks ready for use daily.
Please help us in making sure your student follows these simple expectations:
- Chromebooks need to come to school fully charged
- Chromebooks must remain secured in the case at all times and the case zipped closed when being carried.
- Students are never to have anything placed or stored between the screen and the keyboard (e.i. pencils, notebook, earbuds)
We have had a high number of broken screens due to students not keeping their devices secured in their cases. The parents and students are financially responsible for these damages which can easily be avoided.
Afterschool Academic Assistance (AAA)
The purpose of after school academic assistance is to:
Provide an opportunity for students to complete late work for up to full credit
Receive direct support from caring educators
Build relationships
Teachers from each team will rotate staying after school for AAA on two days (Tuesday, Wednesday, and/or Thursday) 3:10-3:25 PM
MMS Late Work Policy
Students have 24 hours to complete/turn in work beyond the due date and still earn full credit by following these steps included in Google Form for documentation.
Alert teacher and parent/guardian of assignment not completed on time
Include a plan to complete and/or turn in work within 24 hours (or following school day)
Stay after school for Academic Assistance to complete work
If a student can’t stay after school, then complete at home
Or recover the already completed work and submit it electronically, if possible
Have the plan approved by your teacher and share it with your parent/guardian
