Onslow County IF..Now What? From Mrs. Tucker - RHS IF Lead
This week we are taking a closer look at Standards Alignment in the Planning Domain.
Teachers use backward design to create learning target(s), lesson plans, and assessment aligned to the NCSCOS and OCS Priority Standards.
Evidences include:
Standards are unpacked and teachers write clearly defined learning targets.
Formative assessments are aligned to the skill and rigor of the standard and created prior to designing the lesson.
At first, I struggled with the difference between my standards and the learning targets.
Check out these documents provided by Onslow County to better understand the difference between Standards and Learning Targets.
Understanding Learning Targets (attached)
Learning Target Exemplars (attached)
In my English II classroom, I address 3-6 standards each day with the activities in the lesson, but I only write 2-3 Learning Targets for the week.
Come see me if you need help writing your learning targets for the week.

Shout Outs - Submitted by RHS Staff Members
- Shout out to Lacee Estes and Judy Gabaldon for creating an inspiring mural in the 300 hall- way to go fostering a culture of achievement and success!
- Shout out to Justine Smith, Chrissy Vasbinder and Tasha Thompson for expanding their teacher toolboxes at the NMSI training this week.
- Shout out to Shanin Moore for a fabulous job orchestrating "Kindness Week" in our school.
- Misty Jarman does a PHENOMENAL job as testing coordinator. Her testing plans take into account all variables, ensuring the teachers are well prepared and informed ahead of time. She keeps RHS in line with all proper testing protocols and procedures to make sure the whole process goes as smoothly as possible. Any unforeseen glitches are quickly and efficiently dealt with. It is an honor to have such a conscientious person leading our testing. She deserves to be recognized-great job Misty!
- Julie Willaford has arguably the most stressful job on campus. She does a FANTASTIC job managing numerous accounts and fulfilling the multitude of purchase orders and check requests that come her way daily. I am thankful and blessed to have her checking behind me to make sure I’m following ethical accounting procedures. She keeps me employed and out of jail that way! Thank you Julie!
Thank you to Lacee Estes and Judy Gabaldon for the fantastic new AVID mural in the 300 hall!
Cats Den News - From Mr. Salzman
We have started the new semester and Cats den is up and running already. The students who are currently in Cats den are in a recovery class of some sort. They will not get out until they have completed the course.
If you have a student that needs to be referred to Cats den PLEASE send them. All it takes is an email to myself, Mr. Custy, Mrs. Cox, Mrs.Brown, or Mrs.Turner.
The process to get them from Cats Den is the same, just send me or the teacher they are with an email. Last semester was very effective and I would like to thank you all for this.
If a student wont show up for your tutoring just let us know, we can fix this by putting them in Cats Den. If they wont work, we can fix this by putting them in Cats Den.
This is an intervention for all of us to use, and it seems to work!!!
Thanks for all of your help!!

Relay for Life update - Mrs. Tucker
Relay for Life Update:
Thank you everyone for your generosity and making our Chips & Dip fundraiser a success! We raised $103.11 in donations. A special thank you to all who helped by donating the chips & dip as well!
We are right under $1,000 for the year so far and would like to reach that goal this week with a NACHO BAR on Wednesday, March 6.
Also, we will be doing a silent auction for Easter baskets- if your club would like to create and donate a basket it would be greatly appreciated. If you just want to collect and donate items- I can make the baskets no problem. Thank you. The auction will start on April 1, so all donations are needed before then in room 101.
From Mrs. Maready
Please use the instructions in the attachment to print ATTENDANCE ROSTERS when out.

OCS Weekly Update
Onslow County Board of Education Names New Superintendent
Onslow County Schools, February 26, 2019 – The Onslow County Board of Education is pleased to announce the selection and election of Dr. Barry Collins as the next superintendent of the Onslow County Schools (OCS). Dr. Collins will take office on April 1, 2019.
During the search process, the board carefully reviewed applications from a diverse field of thirty-two excellent candidates. Although many qualified candidates applied, the board felt that Dr. Collins’ experience, leadership, and dedication to students would best serve OCS students, staff, and the community for years to come. The board is confident that Dr. Collins will lead the school system to even higher achievement.
Dr. Collins has enjoyed a long and successful career in public education spanning almost thirty years in the state of North Carolina. Since 2007, he has served as the associate superintendent responsible for human resources and student services for the Onslow County Schools. Prior to assuming his current position, Dr. Collins served as the director of human resources for the Jones County Schools. Dr. Collins also previously served as a principal in Jones County and as an assistant principal in Onslow County. He began his career in public education as a math and science teacher at Northwoods Park Middle School in Onslow County.
Dr. Collins has an impressive academic background as well, including a bachelor’s degree in middle grades education from the University of North Carolina Wilmington. He went on to earn a master’s degree in educational administration and a doctorate in educational leadership from East Carolina University. Dr. Collins also is a proud graduate of White Oak High School in Onslow County.
Dr. Collins looks forward to the opportunity to lead the Onslow County Schools and to continue as an active member of the community. Dr. Collins is the son of Arthur L. Collins (deceased) and Mary Toler Collins of Maysville, North Carolina. He is happily married to his wife of twenty-six years, Denise, and they have three children and a daughter-in-law: Heath, Racheal, Thad, and Raegan. He also is an active member with his church family at Bethlehem Baptist. Dr. Collins has issued the following statement about the position:
I am honored and humbled by the opportunity to serve as Superintendent of Schools here in my home county. There is no other place I would rather be than right here, right now. Faith and Family has always guided me in my personal and professional life. We live and work in the best district filled with great students, parents, and staff. With a belief and reliance on servant leadership, I look forward to working with our school board, our commissioners, our community members, and the administrative staff to continue and build upon the Onslow County Schools tradition of “Excellence in Education” for all students.
Please join the board in congratulating Dr. Barry Collins as the new superintendent of the Onslow County Schools.
DR. KAY B. GRESHAM ACADEMIC CHALLENGE
On Saturday, February 23, high school students from across the county gathered at Southwest High School to compete in the Dr. Kay B. Gresham Academic Challenge.
This event was started in 1997 by longtime Onslow County educator Dr. Kay B. Gresham, then president of the Jacksonville Rotary Club. Dr. Gresham’s vision was to promote the ideals of Rotary while providing students in Onslow County, the State of North Carolina, and surrounding states with an opportunity to compete academically. Since Dr. Gresham’s passing in 2013, the Rotary clubs of Onslow County have kept the tournament going in her honor.
After a morning full of challenging competitions, four teams were recognized and received trophies for placing in the tournament. Richlands High School came in 1st place, Onslow Early College High School came in 2nd, Southwest High School came in 3rd, and Northside High School came in 4th. The winning teams were also surprised with a check from the Jacksonville Rotary Club. First place received $150, second place received $100, third place received $75, and fourth place received $50.
Congratulations to the winners and a job well done to all competitors!
