Spring MAP Testing
Spring MAP testing will take place Monday, March 19th (Language Arts) and Tuesday, March 20th (Math). Because the tests are administered during the first 90 minutes of the school day, it is especially important for your student to be in attendance and on time.
Students must use their Sycamore-issued Chromebooks to take this test and, therefore, should bring these devices to school both Monday and Tuesday fully-charged and ready to go.
Thanks for everything you do to make SJH students successful!
School Safety
Safety at SJH is of the utmost importance to us. It is always our intent to make sure we are as prepared as possible for a crisis to occur and keep our students safe. We appreciate your assistance in talking with your child about the importance of the drills and training we have practiced.
A few points to consider:
- The students have been instructed in ALICE (Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evacuate)
- In case of an emergency, please go to the Blue Ash Recreation Center (4433 Cooper Road, 45242) to be reunified with your student.
- If you and your students see something, say something. We strongly encourage you to have conversations with your students about reporting the suspicious behavior--or report the behavior to administration directly, or call or text the Ohio Safer Schools 24/7 Tipline anonymously at 844-SaferOH (844-723-3764)
Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the school.
ANNOUNCEMENT OF SPRING OPTIONAL TESTING FOR IDENTIFICATION OF GIFTED STUDENTS
Although your child may or may not have taken the CogAT in December, you may request that your child be tested on the Otis-Lennon School Ability Test (OLSAT). If you wish to have your child participate in this round of testing, all requests must be made through the following online link by March 21, 2018. In order to decrease disruption to your child's instruction, this testing opportunity will begin prior to the start of the school day. We have scheduled this 45-50 minute testing session to be administered from 7:30 until 8:45 a.m. on Friday, April 6th at Sycamore Junior High School.
Please note it is the parents' responsibility to provide transportation the morning of testing to your child’s building.

In THe Know
Know! How To Talk To Your Kids About School Violence Have you checked in with your children regarding the recent school shooting in Florida to see what they’re thinking and how they’re feeling about it? Do you know what to say? It is only natural for us parents to struggle with what to say about this senseless tragedy, along with the additional acts and threats of school violence that have since followed. While it may not a comfortable topic to discuss with our children, it is a necessary one; and one that will hopefully help to ease some young peoples’ anxiety and fear after witnessing (through news and social media) the horrific events unfold right in front of their eyes, then replayed again and again. How can we do this? * If your child is afraid to go to school, try to ease their mind by taking them through their school’s current safety/security plan in detail, including any additional measures the school may be introducing. Let your child know that in the unlikely event something were to happen, you would be made aware of it right away and that you would rush to be there for them. If your child continues to struggle with feelings of fear related to the recent school tragedy or threats of additional school violence, it may be necessary to reach out to a counselor or therapist.
As parents, it is up to us to provide a filter for what they’re seeing and hearing, give them factual information, clear up any questions, and help them feel safe.
Even as we try to move forward, this conversation will need to continue. Don’t worry about saying everything perfectly. The biggest mistake we can make is to avoid the conversation with our children. If we are the ones leading the discussion, we are in the best position possible to provide them with appropriate and correct information, as well as lend our support along the way.
