  • Born in Urbino, Italy (1444)
  • Parents were prosperous members of the lower class
  • Trained as a painter, and in his youth, he worked as an assistant to the artist Piero della Francesca
  • Worked chiefly in Milan, Italy (1477-1499)
  • Worked secondly in Rome from 1499 to 1514 until his death on March 11, 1514
  • 1477: decorated the facade of the Palazzo del Podestà in Bergamo
  • 1480's: contributed to the architectural design of the Church of Santa Maria presso San Satiro
  • 1488: commissioned by the Sforza family to design the new Pavia Cathedral
  • 1499: left for Rome, and employed by Popes Alexander VI and Julius II
  • 1502: began construction of the Tempietto
  • 1506: formed the basis of design for the St. Peter's Basilica (executed by Michelangelo)
  • Died in Rome, Italy March 11, 1514
