Sharing the Experience- School News and Happenings!

In an effort to reach more families and provide the richness of the learning experience that is captured in photographs and videos we have shifted to an online newsletter. Please call the school (978) 249-2405 or send Principal Ellis an email at if you would like to offer your feedback or suggestions on our Smore newsletter.

End of Year Celebrations! (Part 2)

Dear Families:

It has been truly an amazing year at Pleasant Street School!

We had an incredibly busy last two weeks of school with two concerts, the grades 1,3,and 4 field trips, the Annie play, preschool end of the year ceremonies, fourth grade step up, volunteer appreciation breakfast, field day, the kindergarten nursery rhymes program, and our end of the year all school meeting. Our fourth graders also launched rockets! Phew!! This newsletter is part two of a two part series that showcases moments from these events and celebrations.

Please take time to maintain a healthy balance this summer! Children, and families too, thrive with a combination of active and thoughtful pursuits. Taking advantage of local parks, swimming areas, playing in the hose, and/or a range of free family fun offerings (see postings at the end of this newsletter) will no doubt delight children and form lasting memories. We ask that you take some time to problem solve this summer and enjoy the summer calendar math activity packets that were sent home and are attached below. This math practice, combined with taking time to both picture read and read "just right" books will greatly help your child and go along way to preventing "summer slide." Additionally, take time to investigate the natural world and explore concepts in science with your children. Some of my most fond summer memories are catching fireflies and other assorted bugs, roasting marshmallows, and sitting around a campfire.

Have a great summer!

Pond Probe Study at Northfield Mountain Environmental Center

First grade students in Mrs. Cetto and Mrs. Richardson's classes had a great time learning about inhabitants of a pond on Friday, June 13th. Students were quite excited to check out salamanders, various insects, leeches, frogs, and tadpoles. Many thanks to our school Parent/Teacher Organization for their support of this trip.

Kindergarten Nursery Rhymes Performance!

On June 19th our kindergartners delighted the crowd of parents, grandparents, and our school community with their Nursery Rhymes performance. Special thanks to our teachers Mrs. Darlene Goldthwaite and Mrs. Sheila Webb for their efforts in making this performance such a success as well as to support staff- Mrs. Theresa Mann, Mrs. Renee Parker, Mrs. Vitello, Mrs. Denise Rix, Mrs. Karen Rexroad, and Mrs. Pam McGrath. Fourth Grade Step Up Ceremony

On June 17 we recognized our fourth grade students who will be transitioning to middle school in the fall. Beyond recognizing each student, a highlight of the step up ceremony was the fourth grade slide show set to music selected by students. As a parting gift each student was given a copy of the slide show on DVD which also included footage of the fourth grade play Annie.

Special thanks to Chris Tamulevich for his editing assistance and for making all of DVD copies and to Mitchell Grosky for the beautiful photographs.

Field Day 2014

We wish to thank Mrs. Eileen St. Jean for organizing our annual field day this year and to recognize the work of field day committee members, and the terrific support from family volunteers and PTO members. Put simply it was a GREAT day for our students! We have included some inspired photos, courtesy of Mitchell Grosky, below that in a small way captures part of the experience. To see about 192 additional amazing pictures from field day please visit the Celebrate Schools Athol Royalston Facebook page.

Science in action...fourth grade rocket launching!

Our fourth grade teachers ended the year with a bang, literally, as we launched rockets on Friday, June 20th! Special thanks to community volunteer Ed Lee for his knowledgeable help and guidance with this annual tradition. Thanks are also due to our school PTO for funding provided for the rockets.
