Principal's Post
Dear Mill Creek Parents and Families,
This information within this letter provides an update to families regarding PSSA testing and scheduling in our school this year. The Pennsylvania Department of Education requires all school districts to administer PSSA testing for the 2021-2022 school year. The Pennsylvania State Assessment System is aligned with the PA Standards. The English Language Arts and Mathematics PSSAs are administered in grades 3 through 8 and the Science PSSA is administered in grade 4 and grade 8. Students learn all skills, concepts, and content necessary to take the assessment within their daily reading, writing, mathematics and science instruction. The specific dates for the English Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science Assessment are listed below.

Each year there is a question regarding whether students must take the PSSA. Chapter 4 of Title 22 of the Pa. Code (22 Pa. code 4.4) provides for the right of any parent/guardian to excuse his/her child from the state assessment if the assessment is in conflict with his/her religious beliefs. The Pennsylvania Department of Education requires schools to have policies to ensure parents or guardians are able to review a state assessment in the school entity during convenient hours for parents or guardians in order to determine whether a state assessment conflicts with their religious belief. This is the only reason the state allows students to opt-out of an assessment. If after reviewing the test, parents or guardians find the test to be in conflict with their religious belief and wish their student(s) to be excused from the test, the right of the parents or guardians will not be denied upon written request to the applicable school district Superintendent. Parents or guardians considering opting their child out of the test should contact their child’s school to make arrangements to review the test.
Finally, below is a link to some PSSA parent information documents, including some common questions and answers, the electronic device policy, and the Code of Conduct for Test Takers (this is also shared with students prior to taking the PSSA).
Sincerely,
Shawn M. Ortman
Principal
From the Desk of Mr. Murtha
I do not think I am up for any April Fools Day pranks today, as I feel the entire month of March has been "messing" with us this year. We have been teased with 70+ degree sunny weather one day, only to plummet to barely reaching 20 degrees and gray the next. Now that April has actually arrived, I think we would all agree that March, especially this year, needs to go. I mean, it literally hailed in my neighborhood last Saturday! Hope does spring eternal though, as the hyacinths in front of Mill Creek bloomed this week, tulips have popped up in my own backyard, and... one of my favorites... the forsythia bushes are currently ablaze with their vibrant yellow color!
So, don't let us down, April! We look forward to some outdoor classroom time, jacket-free recesses, and all the other joys of actual spring weather!
Have a wonderful weekend, Mill Creek!
