Lyman Elementary
October 2021
A Note From Mr. McPhee
Dear Lyman Families,
We are off to a great start here at Lyman Elementary with all our students settling in quickly and demonstrating their determination to achieve from the very first day. I couldn’t be prouder of their work ethic and attitude towards learning. We are a great school!
We kicked off this year’s special activities with the Scholastic Book Fair. We were able to hold the fair in one of our portables and every student had multiple opportunities to visit the fair and choose a great book or two. Thank you to the Lyman Parent Group for their continued support of the fair.
We are conducting a State Testing practice with 4th -6th graders during the month of October. Students will be taking a shortened version of the State's ELA, math and science exams. These assessments will helps us determine where students are in their learning on the previous grade-level content. We will use this information to help our students achieve grade level expectations throughout the year.
On Tuesday, October 12, we will be having our monthly Lyman Parent Group meeting in the library at 6:00pm. All attending must wear a mask and practice social distancing. Our parent group has an ambitious agenda for the year. Please come out and learn how you can be involved.
On Thursday, October 21, our school and entire district will participate in a statewide earthquake drill called the Great Washington Shake Out. This is an important practice drill for earthquake safety. We take our emergency drill practices very seriously. I cannot stress enough the lifesaving actions of drop, cover and hold. Please reinforce these safety actions at home.
Do not forget that school conferences are on November 8-10 and 12. We will have early release at 12:30pm on those days. There is a non-student day on November 11 to recognize Veterans Day.
Thank you all for sending us your wonderful children. We take our responsibility of educating them seriously, and we appreciate your continued support. Please feel free to contact me anytime.
Sincerely,
Scott A. McPhee

Halloween Information
Because Halloween is an exciting time for children, we encourage our students to dress in a way that will protect the learning environment for all students and staff, even those who elect not to participate.
Similar to years past, our staff would like to communicate the following guidelines:
- All costumes need to meet the criteria for dress outlined on page SWSD8 of the Student Handbook.
- Inappropriate dress will be covered or removed.
- Ask yourself; will this interfere with any child’s education?
- Students are not to bring their costumes to school to change into. Whatever students wear to school is assumed by our staff to be their costume. This includes makeup and accessories.
- Full face masks and simulated weapons are not allowed.
- Students will have outdoor recess and may have PE. Please help them to dress accordingly.
Teachers will communicate any additional information related to October 29. Please keep in mind if teachers ask for treats, they must be store-bought and in the original, sealed package.
