Student Card Campaign to Bring Appreciation to Healthcare Heroes

As healthcare workers across the region and state face ongoing challenges related to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Spring ISD students are being asked to share their support by creating cards for the Celebration of Healthcare Heroes Campaign.

The effort is in support of St. Luke’s Health staff members who are working on the frontlines of the pandemic. The hospital system’s Chief Executive Officer said the card campaign comes at a time when many in the industry are experiencing exhaustion and burnout, 18 months into the fight against COVID-19.

“As our nurses and caregivers face this fourth — and what threatens to be the most impactful — surge of COVID-19 cases, we see and feel their exhaustion,” T. Douglas Lawson, Ph.D said. “Our providers are working to deliver exceptional care to the sickest members of our communities, and some days, they have little left for themselves or their own families. For all that they give to all of us, I would like to ask for your help to give something back to them.”

Spring ISD is encouraging students to create cards featuring pictures, notes, or whatever else could put a smile on the faces of these local caregivers.

“As a district, we are always grateful for the tireless efforts of our healthcare heroes throughout the Houston area,” said Spring ISD Superintendent Dr. Rodney E. Watson. “But during this especially difficult time, it is imperative that we let them know that we are here in support of them and that we see their incredible efforts. I hope that the words of encouragement and gratitude from our Spring ISD students can provide a bright moment in their day.”

Bring your cards to school this week!

Don’t miss your chance to take the PSAT

For Spring ISD 8th- 11th-grade students, it’s the time of year to think about signing up to take the Preliminary SAT, or PSAT, test (also referred to as the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, or NMSQT).

The PSAT/NMSQT for 10th- and 11th-Grade Spring ISD students is on Oct. 13 this year, while students in Grade 8 and 9 will have the opportunity to take the test on different days designated for their campus between Oct. 11 - 15.

The PSAT is a great opportunity for rising high schoolers and high school underclassmen to experience the rigors and challenges of studying for and taking standardized college admissions tests. The PSAT is very similar in format to the SAT and makes a great practice test before taking the actual SAT.

Not only is the PSAT a great way to help get ready for later college admissions testing on the SAT or even the ACT, but the PSAT is also the qualifying test for the National Merit Scholarship Program, which has recognized over 3.3 million students and provided scholarships worth more than $1.8 billion since 1955.
