Positive Champion - Character Ed Assembly

Last Friday we had our second Character Ed Assembly! Our trait for October is being a Positive Champion! All month long we will be talking about how we can be positive: I can keep trying, I can work hard, I can take risks, I can encourage others, It will all be ok! After the assembly we met in our Alward Teams for some fun activities. Take some time to talk with your children about these traits at home! Check out the pics below of our Alward Teams!

Storybook Pumpkin Patch

The Alward Library is growing a storybook pumpkin patch, and we need your help! Students can decorate a pumpkin to look like a favorite storybook character and bring it to the library to “plant” in our Storybook Pumpkin Patch! See the attached document for all the details!

Enchanted Forest Book Fair

Our fall book fair is coming up! We are going to have a CHANGE WAR between classes to raise money for ALL FOR BOOKS. The money raised will help to buy books for children who otherwise couldn't afford them. As an added incentive, the class that raises the most money (class average) will get to keep 100% of their money raised to buy books for their classroom! The CHANGE WAR will begin on Monday, October 8th and end of Wednesday, October 17th. Please send in your loose change or bills to help others and Alward. Thank you!

You can also pre-order copies of The Diary of a Wimpy Kid - The Meltdown. Pre-orders need to be turned in no later than Thursday Oct. 25. The book is $8.99 plus tax so the total is $9.53.

Please see the attached order form below.

Art Room News!

Square One Art forms were sent home this week! This is a great opportunity to order your child's artwork in a variety of forms. This is also a great way to support the Art Program at Alward! The money raised will go toward a light box and some other art tools our kids can use to enhance their art practice. Hopefully, we can get some more tack strips to hang more art in the halls too! We are also looking for a parent or two who would like to help hang art once a month. Please contact Maggie Bandstra at if you are interested in helping!

I also want to let you know we will be painting Ottawa county snow plows this spring during art class, so when they see them rolling down the street at parades over the summer, they will see their artwork on the front of the plow.

On November 6, voters in each of the public school districts in Ottawa County will be asked to consider an enhancement millage proposal of 0.9 mill for 10 years. Please see the attached flier below for all the details on how important this is for our district!

Count on Me-Alward Students and Staff Making a Difference

This year, our students and staff are working on taking initiative to make a difference in the lives of others. If you hear about how an Alward student, teacher, or staff member made a difference in someone else's life, please fill out the Google Form below. We will be posting these "Count on Me" sightings on our new bulletin boards right outside the main office. Students, parents and staff members can recognize others for things as simple as someone always saying hello to them or holding the door for them. We can also recognize others for going as far as helping out in the community. We want to know how our students and staff are making a difference at Alward and out in the community and celebrate these acts of kindness this year! Thank you for taking the time to support this "Count on Me" initiative this school year!

Girls on the Run

Girls on the Run is an after school program which inspires girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running. Our ten-week program is designed for girls in grades 3-5. Lessons are led by trained volunteer coaches who guide and mentor the girls through an uplifting curriculum that focuses on life-long skills to improve emotional and physical health. The program culminates in a non-competitive 5k which gives the girls a chance to shine and an overwhelming sense of accomplishment.

The Program starts mid March and runs for 10 weeks. Girls meet after school at Alward. Please see the attached flier for all the details!

Registration Opens Nov. 1 -
