Johnson Jaguars
Your Weekly Update from Johnson Elementary School
Social Emotional Learning update!
Our Johnson Jaguars continue progressing through the Social Emotional Learning (SEL) curriculum, Everyday Speech. As part of the first unit, Jaguars increased their awareness about who they are, their feelings and background. They are continuing their learning about how to react and manage their feelings, take ownership of their behaviors and choices and set goals for themselves.
As part of our transformative SEL work in Natick, we are introducing the DESSA-mini screening tool, which we piloted last year. This user-friendly tool is completed by classroom teachers and used to screen for social and emotional strengths of our students and determine which students need additional support though our SEL curriculum.
This year, all Elementary schools will complete the DESSA-mini as a universal SEL strength-based screener. In the future, this will continue twice per school year, once in the Fall/earlyWinter and once in the Spring.
The competencies assessed align very well with the Everyday Speech curriculum as well as the CASEL™ framework and include self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, goal directed behavior, personal responsibility, decision making, and optimistic thinking.

*****FIVE Things You Need to Know!
1 - REPORTS OF STUDENT PROGRESS WILL BE LIVE TODAY, JANUARY 27 AT 3:00 PM
Mid year Reports of Student Progress (ROSP) forms will be live in Powerschool for caregivers to view next Friday. Here are directions to help you access this report. I know when I only do certain things once or twice a year I sometimes forget how. I hope this helps.
2 - GRADE 3 MEETING RE: JOHNSON CLOSURE/TRANSITIONS RESECHEDULED
The 3rd grade families meeting originally scheduled for last week has been moved to this Tuesday, January 31, at 7:00 pm. JAG (Johnson Advisory Group) is hosting grade-level meetings where parents can connect and discuss your family’s questions regarding the school closure and transitions. Join here: meet.google.com/did-gjnu-krw
3 - THE COLD WINTER WEATHER IS HERE! Please make sure your children are dressed appropriately for these cold days. In addition, remind your children to check the lost and found if they have left something behind.
4 - LABEL, LABEL, LABEL
A lot of our Jaguars leave things behind each day. This is a friendly reminder to label all belongings that you send to school with your students. If items are labeled, we can return them to their rightful owners. Grab a sharpie and write your student's name on items (gloves, hats, coats, boots, water bottles, etc.).
4 - FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE
We have a range of financial supports available in the Natick Public Schools. This includes assistance with school fees, such as the bus and picture day, scholarships for programs such as the Book Fair and connections to community resources that may be helpful. If you are interested in these programs, please contact Laura Loftus, our school counselors, to have a private conversation. Her email is lloftus@natickps.org.
Principal's Message
Dear Johnson Families,
Where does the time go? Tuesday was the 90th day of school, which is the midpoint of the 2022-23 school year. Yes, we are halfway through this fabulous school year! It was wonderful to observe the impressive work of our first grade mathematicians in Ms. Chrissy Sweeney and Ms. Brenna Turner’s classrooms as they shared their drawings of several different visual representations of the fraction one-half. Keep up the great work!
On Wednesday morning, we celebrated a Johnson School first with a before school string orchestra concert under the direction of Ms. Sirkka Natti. And on Thursday morning, our Johnson Band performed under the direction of Mr. Tom Rice. Our third and fourth grade musicians all did an excellent job in performing before a live audience. Thank you to our students and to all of the families members who joined us for these special before school events!
Just a reminder that Mid-Year Reports of Student Progress (ROSP) are live in PowerSchool for parents and caregivers to view this afternoon Friday, January 27 at 3:00 p.m.
Here are diretions to help you access this report.
We understand that when something is only accessed once or twice a year it can be easy to forget how. We hope that the ROSP provides you with informative information on student progress as we are now at the mid-point of the school year.
Best regards,
John
