Marauder Update: 8/17
Welcome Back Edition
Welcome Back!
It is hard to believe that a new school year is right around the corner! You may feel over the next couple of weeks that information is coming out quickly as the school year approaches (and that the school year is coming at lightning speed). I hope you find some comfort in that everyone feels that way. We are always excited to have our students and staff come back for another year and each year, our goal is to make it better than the last. In this newsletter, there will be information about our Prep Day, Parking Permits, Pictures, Virtual Course Requirements, Direct College Enrollment with Henry Ford College, Clubs, and the start of school.
Prep Day
Parking Permit Information
Due to the success of purchasing parking passes online, we are going to continue the process for the 2023-2024 school year. ***PLEASE READ THE ENTIRE PROCESS BELOW***
In this document, you will be given 5 areas to choose from. Last year there were 6 areas to choose. The parking area by the baseball and softball fields are not available to start the year due to the field upgrades and construction. Once construction is complete we will have that area open for overflow parking later in the year. We will be asking you for your first, second, and third best choices. Once you have completed these steps, we will do our best to honor the option that you chose. We will assign these spots in the following order: Seniors, Juniors, and Sophomores using a payment report from the online system. The quicker you pay and fill out this document, the more likely you will get a spot in the area of your choosing.
In order for you to pick up your Parking Pass on Prep Day (August 24th), you will need to complete both steps prior to Midnight on August 23rd.
***You will not be assigned a spot until both steps are completed and verified.***
In order to get an assigned parking spot you will need to follow this two-step process.

Class Composite & Senior Photos
When thinking about your senior photos, please remember the following information. You may get your pictures taken anywhere and have them be in the Yearbook, but if you do not get your photo taken with Ryan Donaldson Photography, then your picture will NOT be in the composite. An example of a Class Composite can be found to the left.
Please find a message from Ryan Donaldson Photography below:
- We are Carlson High School's preferred senior portrait photographer. This means if you do not get your photo taken with Ryan Donaldson Photography, your picture will not be in the Composite.
- The photo we take will be fully edited to make your senior look their best.
- We show students their photo to make sure they are happy with it before they leave.
- We will send the photo to the yearbook department, you won't have to do anything else.
- Having your photos taken by us is the only way to be in the class composite.
Senior Yearbook photos will be taken only during the senior time slot on Prep Day - No appointment is needed
Yearbook photos are:
$25 - You will have your photo taken, edited, delivered to the yearbook department, and be part of the class composite.

Virtual Course Requirements
If you are enrolled in a virtual class (MVU, e2020, or LVS) you are required to attend a mandatory 30 minute mentor meeting on Prep Day and have a signed 21f virtual course contract that can be found here. There will be 4 opportunities on the August 24th Prep Day for this meeting in room 210C as follows:
12th grade 9:15am - 9:45am
11th grade 10:30am - 11am
10th grade 11:45am - 12:15pm
9th grade 1:45pm - 2:15pm
If a student can’t attend the CHS Prep Day virtual class meeting, students can instead attend a 30 minute session at the Lakeshore Virtual Prep Day on Tuesday, August 22nd. The options for Tuesday’s sessions are either 9:30 am or 1pm. Students who do not attend will not receive virtual courses on their schedule.
Direct College Enrollment
Henry Ford College will be offering two Dual Enrollment classes on site at Carlson this Fall -- ENG 131 English Composition and SOC 131 Intro to Sociology. These classes will be running during Advisory and 3rd hour. If you are interested in signing up for one or both of these Direct College classes, please see Mrs. Trush in the Counseling Office for more information.
Schedules/Textbooks/Lockers/Yearbook/ Clubs
Students will be able to pick up their schedules and textbooks during their assigned grade level time. Students will be able to check out their locker location and visit various tables to join the many clubs we have here at CHS. You will also be able to order your Yearbook on Prep Day as well. The School Store, Boosters, and Pep Club will be onsite with many purchase options so it’s a good idea to have cash if you are looking for school gear.
Technology Agreement/Chromebook Care Agreement
Students will need to bring a signed Technology Agreement form to Prep Day on August 24th if they want to get their Chromebooks. If a student does not have a signed Technology Agreement on Prep Day, they will not receive a Chromebook until on or after the first day of school - September 5th. If you do not have a printer at home, the Technology Agreements will be located in the secure vestibule at the HS and available for you to pick up from 8am-2pm beginning Friday, August 18th until prep day.
The technology agreement form can be found attached under this information.

Parking Drop Off Procedures
In an effort to improve our drop off times and road congestion at West Jefferson we are implementing the following:
Before School Dismissal
The Woodruff Road Entrance, due to construction, will close starting at 8am and remain closed until 2pm. It is only open to students parking in the Main Student Lot. Parents should not drop off students in this area or park in this area with their students waiting to be dropped off.
The West Jefferson Entrance is only open to parents dropping off their students. Parents must drop off their students and leave using the roundabout. There is no “standing” or “parking” in this area. As cars pull into the area with the Blue painted curbs, they are to drop their students off and then pull through and use the roundabout and exit.
*If you are dropping off a student before 7:15 and do not feel comfortable leaving your student to wait outside, please park in the Shumate Lot in the parking spaces closest to the Carlson Bus Loop. At 7:15 you can let your student out and they can enter Carlson using the Bus Loop doors.
The Shumate Entrance is only open to students who park in the Memorial Wing/Pool area and parents waiting with their students for drop off.
After School Dismissal
The Woodruff Road Entrance/Exit will be closed from 8am until 2pm due to construction. It will close again at 3:30pm. It is only open for students to exit the Main Student Lot during this time. Parents should not use this entrance/exit to park and wait for their students to come out.
The West Jefferson Entrance/Exit is only open to parents picking up their students. During this time of day it is okay to pull all the way through the roundabout and begin lining up on the right side by the stop sign as you are facing West Jefferson street and wait for your student to exit the building.
The Shumate Entrance/Exit is only open for students to exit the Memorial Building/Pool parking area during this time. Parents should not use this entrance/exit to park and wait for their students to come out.
