Game Show Classroom: Building Student Engagement
Many educators use games in their classroom. It may be for review, to introduce a new concept, or to simply challenge the students. For whatever the reason, games in the classroom engage students and help in the recollection of material presented in the classroom.
Some of the most popular game options include Kahoot!, Quizzizz, Quizlet Live, and GimKit. The following article compares these popular game apps and websites as well as gives a few other options to look at for the classroom.
Making the Most of Pear Deck
Pear Deck is another great way to build student engagement. Pear Deck allows the average power point presentation to become interactive for the student. From formative assessments to interactive questions, you can see instantly if a student is getting the concept being presented in class. The following websites are step by step videos and information on how to set-up and use Pear Deck in the classroom.

Project Based Learning: The Growth Mindset Continues
As we continue our journey with PBL, we continually grow in our learning capacity and in our mindset. PBL is a long, uphill journey that takes time and patience. I have many new resources for junior high teachers to use for that journey. The following article once again answers the question "What the heck is Project-Based Learning?" and the following picture shows the new resources available for the junior high. These resources were provided by a Sikeston Foundation Grant.
Educational Apps if you have a sick child at home (or if school is closed)
Educators have sick children from time to time also. Many of you are well aware of the educational apps available to your students as well as your own children. Sometimes screen time is a necessity if we have children at home and work we need to do. Here are three apps that make screen time a learning time:
CodeMonkey: a game-based education program that teaches children to code. It comes with a membership fee, but there's a free 14-day trial that doesn't require a credit card.BrainPop: Online learning across subject areas for children in kindergarten through middle school and ELL learning for all age groups. Free.
Khan Academy: Online learning in math, science, and literacy for all age groups. Standards-aligned. Free.
