The Explorer Mission
By: Clayton Hunter
What are Explorer Missions
- They are missions that astronauts can't go on.
- They send a rocket /satellite into Earth's orbit to conduct scientific experiments.
- There has been 94 missions since the program started in 1958.
Explorer 59 Mission
Explorer 59 was sent into space to research the solar wind and its interaction with Earth's magnetic field. The solar wind is the flow of charged particles from the sun.
The first Explorer Mission Rocket
The first explorer mission rocket was called Juno 1.It was a four stage rocket that could go 18,000 miles per hour. The rocket carried Explorer 1 into space.
The rocket diagram
They sent this rocket into space where it opens and shoots out the the satellite to the place its supposed to go.
The cost of the Explorer MIssion
It would cost about 200 million dollars today just to get the Explorer Mission started. That does not include the cost of the rocket.
The Explorer Mission
Explorer 1 is the first satellite launched by the United States. It was launched on January 31,1958 and was sent to investigate energetic particles which are part of the Van Allen radiation belt. The study lasted until May 23, 1958.
How many Missions have there been
They have done 94 Explorer Missions and only 2 have failed. I think the Explorer Missions will continue for many years to come.
