Leaders of Learning
This week's nominees:
Tammie Earhart: for designing and creating the new bulletin boards in the 2nd grade building--they have transformed that hallway. Thank you!
Charity Blanchard: "I nominate Mrs. Blanchard for her quick and proactive problem solving skills while we were having difficulties with our phone lines. When people were calling into the school they could hear it ringing on their side, but it was not ringing here. To avoid parents being angry at us, thinking that we were ignoring phone calls, she came up with the simple suggestion that Mrs. Houseman send a connect-ed to make parents aware of our phone situation. Great thinking, Mrs. Blanchard! You saved us, as well as some parents, some unwanted stress. Thank you!!!"
Keri Crowl: "Thank you for taking the initiative to find homes for boxes and boxes of books that were going to be discarded. She called daycares, Sandhills Community College Early Childhood Program and other professionals who would benefit from having a supply of books. Thank you!!"
Sue Clay and Moneka McDonald: "I’d like to nominate Sue Clay and Moneka McDonald as leaders of learning. They have taken the new traditional k assistants under their wings and helped them prepare for the school year. I’m sure this will continue throughout the year as well."

Walkthrough Focus
Enriched environments--over time increase the brain’s ability to connect, communicate internally and to learn
Impoverished environments--have the opposite effect – they shrink the brain’s ability to connect and communicate and limit learning potential
Enriched looks like...
Attractive
•Colors that pop
•Organized
•Not too visually stimulating
•Bulletin boards should serve dual purpose—colorful but also with a message
Neat, clean, easy to maneuverEngaging
•Students on task
•Students working independently
•Interactive activities
•Working with teammates or partners
Changing
•Anchor charts, etc.
•Needs to show different areas of learning
•Should show growth
•Areas should be organized and changed as needed if you see any problems
Sends a Message
•Anchor charts for students to use to lead and guide their learning
•People (visitors) know what learning is taking place and why kids are in charge of their learning
•Learning is obvious through the work that is displayed
•Student centered
•Shows what is important
Our Walkthrough Focus in Year Round classrooms will now be one of the 6 characteristics of Great Classrooms that we learned about last year: "Organized lessons built around Clear, Measurable Learning Targets". We do not collect lesson plans at Southern Pines Primary, but Tonya and I do expect that lesson plans are clearly displayed on desks so that we can refer to them when in classrooms. We will be looking for connections between your lesson plans, the I Can statements and the instruction we are seeing in your classroom. We look forward to the great things we will see over the next several weeks!!
