Leadership Team message from Jonathan R
Kia ora koutou,
As another long weekend approaches with the first Matariki break for Aotearoa New Zealand [https://www.mbie.govt.nz/business-and-employment/employment-and-skills/employment-legislation-reviews/matariki/matariki-public-holiday/] we have been reflecting at school on what this means with some staff participating in professional learning around the new Aotearoa New Zealand Histories curriculum and the launch of our new Edendale [DRAFT] Te reo Māori Language Progressions [our own expectations of te reo learning in the classroom]. This mahi sits alongside the professional learning and development for structured literacy, including writing and teacher learning communities [effective teaching practice].
We have been hard hit with staff absences recently and continue to remain fully operational but at times some children have to be in another class as even the relief teacher pool is low or non-existent. Thank you for your support in this and the amazing mahi Jonathan Jackson [DP] puts into trying to have kaiako in front of every class. Staying home when sick, and wearing masks will help us all keep safe over this time.
We'd like the thank our support staff for the mahi they do at our school and this was celebrated with a small morning tea last Rāmere. Recent pay equity claims have improved their pay conditions, and at Edendale for the last four years, we have paid the living wage as a minimum for the work they do.
Thank you for supporting our PTA [Friends of Edendale] support us in raising funds to help cover the costs of the new resources needed to run effective literacy programmes. As of writing this, you have donated an outstanding $10,700 which will cover around a third of the resources we have purchased in years 1-3 [https://www.lizkaneliteracy.co.nz/shop?page=2]. Thank you.
We wish you all an amazing Matariki long weekend and hopefully, you can take some time to spend with friends and whānau. School finished at 3:00pm today and reopens again on Monday 27th at 8:30am.
Stay well, stay safe, and be kind.
Ngā mihi

Masks at Edendale:
We have recently mandated masks for all staff while teaching and outside if they can't physically distance themselves. We also require masks to be worn by all visitors to our site and ask that parents/caregivers refrain from entering our classroom spaces. We offer masks to all children and would like your help supporting us with this. In the latest Ministry of Education information sent to schools, Iona Holsted [Secretary of Education] states the following
"While I understand it can be difficult to balance competing views about masks in some communities, we continue to strongly recommend that your staff and students in Year 4 and above wear masks when indoors. It will go a long way in protecting the vulnerable among you – everyone wearing masks helps protect those of your students and teachers who are at greater risk of infection. We know, for example, that the parents of some children with disabilities have felt that their children are less safe at school because of the lack of masks".
We have air purification devices, CO2 monitors [in some classrooms], and use windows and doors to well ventilate spaces. Please send your children to school with enough warm layers so that they can keep warm if they are feeling cold. We do have the heating on, but also windows open to maintain fresh air circulation.
Note - The person on the left in the picture below is infectious.
Open morning for the new Garden To Table [GTT] facility:
On Thursday the 7th of July we will have the new space open between 8:30am and 9:00am for you to come in and see the kitchen, and to meet Kylie and Sonia [our GTT staff]. We hope to see you then. This is not our official opening but a chance to take a wee peek.

So much happening in the PTA: Colour Runs, Return of the Bake Sale (Yeah!) and some new members joining us (Double Yeah!!)
The sun is shining this Matariki week, and the colour runs are back!
By the time this newsletter is published we hope the weather has remained kind, and all the races will have been complete. We hope your children enjoyed themselves and got colourful! Staff and parents have both said that they really enjoyed being able to reconnect around something that was so much fun. This has always been a popular event and we are thrilled to be able hold it.
Thank you so much to everyone who has donated – it is so appreciated and it is for such a great cause – Edendale’s structured literacy programme. It is achieving great results already and we are pleased to be fundraising to support a programme that is making such a difference for our kids.

There is still time to catch Mahi Tahi and Aroha, who are doing an outstanding job fundraising. No donation is too small. We know it’s easy to forget as life gets back to being as busy as ever, so if that’s you, click on the link and donate now.
As a reminder, the teams are:
· Aroha (Rms 1-5) Ariel, Rosie, Callum, Philippa, Fabienne
· Atawhai (Rms 7-10) Latha, Heike, Yashika, Adrienne
· Akoranga (Rms 18-21) Suzie, Hayley & Lisa, Aine, Grace D
· Mahi Tahi (Rms 11-17) Mark, Lily, Christopher, Grace R, Tahi, Ingrid & Liese
· Tuakana (Rms 24-29) Shamin, Katrina, Leah & Tracy, Braedon, Nik & Lisa, Melody
Finally a call for sponsorship:
We are still on the look out for a sponsor to help us meet the costs of the colour. If you think
you can help please contact the PTA at pta@edendale.school.nz (Thank you!!)
We are delighted to announce the Return of the Bake Sales!
Check out our new look poster later in the newsletter, and in the meantime we would like to give a huge shout out to all the parents who ‘help their kids bake’ and volunteer on the day, Chetan and Zoe who help us with the logistics, the teachers who volunteer to host, our Treasurer who makes sure we have change for you, and most of all, YOU, who carefully save up those precious coins and notes and remember to bring them along:
When? Next Friday 1st July after school.
Please wear a mask, as usual, on school grounds. Table will be located in front and back courtyards as usual, and we will continue last year’s tradition of a table dedicated to children only from years 0-3 near the new block (rooms 1-10).
New parents joining the PTA
We were delighted to see some new faces and hear from some parents who are interested in finding out how they can get involved. If you’ve been thinking about it why not join some of our new team members and find out more together. And if you can’t make the meetings there are other ways to lend a hand, so don’t feel shy.
As our kids grow up, and long standing team members graduate to new callings (like Intermediate school) we have some essential roles that open up. Could you be our new Treasurer? Look out for some more information coming soon on some important roles that we are looking to fill in the PTA.
Our next meeting is delayed a little until after the school holidays: put it in your diaries, and come along on Thursday 28th July from 7:00-8:00pm and see what it’s all about. Please drop us a line at pta@edendale.school.nz for details on how to join in.
Stay safe,
Friends of Edendale PTA
