Macbeth's Downfall

Who - or what - made Macbeth kill?

Lady Macbeth brings destruction

In the play Macbeth, Macbeth's downfall can be blamed on Lady Macbeth. Lady Macbeth clearly pushes Macbeth over the edge, comes up with the idea, and executes it. When Lady Macbeth is reading the letter from Macbeth, she wants to murder Duncan, and be evil, saying "Come, you spirits That tend on mortal thoughts, unsex me here, And fill me from the crown to the toe top-full Of direst cruelty. Make thick my blood. Stop up the access and passage to remorse, That no compunctious visitings of nature Shake my fell purpose, nor keep peace between The effect and it! Come to my woman’s breasts, And take my milk for gall, you murd'ring ministers, Wherever in your sightless substances You wait on nature’s mischief. Come, thick night, And pall thee in the dunnest smoke of hell, That my keen knife see not the wound it makes, Nor heaven peep through the blanket of the dark To cry 'Hold, hold!' ". Lady Macbeth is the one who comes up with the idea, as the quote above shows, and she is also the one who pushes Macbeth over the edge. She mocks him, telling him "Was the hope drunk Wherein you dressed yourself? Hath it slept since? And wakes it now, to look so green and pale At what it did so freely? From this time Such I account thy love. Art thou afeard To be the same in thine own act and valor As thou art in desire? Wouldst thou have that Which thou esteem’st the ornament of life, And live a coward in thine own esteem, Letting “I dare not” wait upon “I would, ” Like the poor cat i' th' adage?". She is mocking Macbeth to get a response out of him. She uses trickery and deceit to get her way. This is clearly the driving factor in Macbeth's downfall. And she is bound and determined to kill Duncan. She doesn't quit mocking Macbeth. When asked what will happen if they fail, she says "We fail? But screw your courage to the sticking-place, And we’ll not fail". She is not going to stop and she will do whatever it takes to kill Duncan. Lady Macbeth has not only devised the idea to kill Duncan, she convinced Macbeth to do it as well. She is the one who leads to Macbeth's downfall. Also, when Macbeth forgets to blame the murder on the guards, she smears blood all over them without any remorse. She is clearly prepared to go the extra step to get her way, even if that step is not required.

Movie Connection

Crazy, Stupid, Love is a film about a man whose life is ruined by his wife. His wife has an affair with him and asks for a divorce.
