Thesis Sentence : Foreshadowing
Throughout the novel, the author foreshadows and gives numerous clues to the unexpected ending of three of the characters.
Identity of Mike Bickle
Mike Bickle's secret about his real mother is hinted throughout the story. At this point of the story Mike is trying to reconnect with his mother. "That's nice," Mrs. Partridge said, patting her knees. "Oh, Phoebe I think I met your brother." Phoebe said I don't have a brother." (pg.193). This is foreshadowing because Mrs. Partridge is indicating that Phoebe has brother and Mrs. Winterbottom has a son. Now in the story Mrs. Winterbottom is coming back home but she is bringing someone with her. "And oh! Most, important! She said that she is bringing someone with her." (pg.241). This is significant because she might be bringing Mike Bickle her son.
Salamonca's Mom's Death
There are many things that give clues that Salamonca's mom is dead. At this point Salamonca's mom just left and her and her father are having a rough time. On that night that we got the bad news that she was not returning he pounded and pounded on that wall with a chisel and a hammer. (pg.3). Foreshadowing is done here because the author is telling the reader that Salamonca's mom is not coming back. Salamonca just found the bus that her mother died in. The bus lay on its side like an old sick horse, its broken headlights staring out mournfully into the surrounding trees. (pg.264). This is big in the story because Salamonca can have some closure about her mothers death.
Gram's Death
There a few big clues that show about Gram's death. Gram's just got bit by a water moccasin. "Oh!" gram said and she reached down, pulled up a snake and gave gramps a puzzled look. (pg.95). Grams was just bit by a poisonous snake and is hurt and might not make it. Grams had a stroke and is at the hospital. The doctors said Gram has had a stroke.(pg.265). Grams is to sick and to hurt to do anything and might die.
Conclusion
Foreshadowing is used numerous time in the story to give the reader an idea about Mike Bickle being Mrs. Winterbottom's son, Salamonca's mom's death and the sad death of Grams. Although the faiths of some of the characters are sad they helped give clues to the reader about what happens throughout the story.
