Want to Volunteer This Year? Information about Background Checks and Required Training
Also, if you haven't already done so, you'll need to attend a Level II volunteer training with Asheville City Schools before you can volunteer at Claxton. The training is a one-time requirement (not needed each year) and this year's schedule is set so go ahead and make plans to attend one of these brief (~20 min) trainings. Please see below for the schedule. All trainings are held in the Board Room at the Central Office of Asheville City Schools at 85 Mountain Street. No registration is required to attend the training.

Seeking 5th Grade Family Volunteers for Teacher Appreciation Lunch
Throughout the school year, we will share our appreciation of the teachers and staff at Claxton with a series of lunches, organized by the PTO and provided by Claxton’s families. We plan to serve lunch on early release days, host a holiday lunch in December, and plan an exciting week with various gifts during Teacher Appreciation Week in May!
We have four luncheons scheduled this school year and we will ask each grade to help out with one meal. Details will follow closer to those dates. As seasoned Claxton families, the 5th Grade Families will provide our first lunch on Friday, September 14.
All 5th Grade Families can efficiently sign up via a Google Sheets document to help out. If you are having difficulties using the Google Sheets, please email Michelle Gray with the item(s) you would like to bring and she will record it for you. To make it even easier we will be collecting all items in the AM drop off line from 7:15-8:00 AM on Fri, Sept 14.

2018-2019 Staff Appreciation Co-Chairs
You're Invited to Claxton's Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO) Meetings!
Once a month the Claxton PTO meets in the Claxton media center to review the status and progress of initiatives the PTO supports and manages, and to hear updates from Claxton staff. These meetings are open to ALL and attending is a great way to learn about PTO activities, school updates and whether you would be interested in taking on a role within the PTO. This year we’re trying a new approach. The first 30 minutes (6pm-6:30pm) will be when we “conduct business,” such as reporting on budget and upcoming event needs (for example, our upcoming Fun Run and Fall Carnival). The second 30 minutes (6:30pm-7pm) will be dedicated to updates provided by Principal Edwards and teachers, as well as time for Open Comment should anyone want to ask questions and / or voice ideas. Everyone is welcome to attend the full hour, but for those looking to only hear from school staff and participate in Open Comment, this gives 30 minutes back to busy schedules. Below are upcoming meeting dates. We’d love to see your face! If you have any questions, please email clxparents@gmail.com.

Inquiry 20% Class for 3rd-5th Graders
Parent Room Reps Still Needed!
Room Reps are still needed in 15 of Claxton's 25 classrooms, so please consider taking on this role for your student’s class. The intended role of the Room Rep is to help distribute important information via email to all class families regarding class and PTO events. For example, sign-up sheets for volunteers at the Fun Run or Fall Carnival will be sent out through Room Reps. We want every family to be informed about events and allowed the opportunity to volunteer at Claxton. The Room Rep also collaborates with the classroom teacher regarding class needs, which may include extra supplies, snacks, or volunteers for class events.
Room reps are still needed for the following classes:
K : Allen
1st: Barta, Barrett, and Ferguson
2nd: Oakes and Kickert
3rd: Arnst, McCarthy, Conti, and Seimer
4th: Baggerly
5th: Briggs, Audrey, Martin, and Williams
Are you interested in being a room rep this year? If so, please contact Amanda Pattanayak at alsevigny@aol.com or at (617) 953-0855 as soon as possible.
Fall Fun Run Fundraiser

Be on the lookout for a pledgebook to come home with your student after the Pep Rally in a couple of weeks! Check out the school Facebook page to see an awesome video on the Fun Run and to get your kids excited to help make this the most successful year yet!!!! Thanks so much!!!!

Author Visit with Grace Lin
GRACE LIN IS COMING TO CLAXTON!! This author visit on Monday September 17th at 9 am is an enormous honor for Claxton Elementary School. Grace is a Newbery Honor winning author and illustrator of picture books, early chapter books and chapter books. Her most well-known books are Where The Mountain Meets the Moon and The Year of the Dog and she is touring to promote her new picture book, Big Mooncake for Little Star, which I will be reading to all K-2 classes. An author study on Grace Lin had already been in the works for later in the school year (in an arts collaboration with Ms. Olson and Ms. Rigsby!) so to have her be able to visit us is just the most exciting news. Watch for book order forms in Thursday folders if you would like to order an autographed copy of one of her books for your child. A big thanks to Malaprops Bookstore and Cafe for this opportunity!
WAIT--THERE'S MORE! Another Author Visit for 4th Graders!
WAIT - THERE’S MORE!!!
Also exciting is that our 4th graders get to meet with Sheila Turnage, author of the Mo and Dale Mystery series including Three Times Lucky. Sheila is also a Newbery Honor winner!! Some of our 4th graders had read this in a book club last year and loved it! This author visit will take place in the back of the media center on Tuesday September 18th at 9:30. A big thanks to Malaprops Bookstore and Cafe for this opportunity!
Seussical Jr. the Musical
Announcing Claxton's School Musical!! Seussical Jr. will appear onstage at Claxton with performances November 16th-18th! That's right--Claxton's musical is happening in the fall and not in the spring this school year. Horton the Elephant, the Cat in the Hat and all of your favorite Dr. Seuss characters spring to life onstage in Seussical Jr., a fantastical musical extravaganza from Tony award winners, Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty. Transporting audiences from the Jungle of Nool to the Circus McGurkus, the Cat in the Hat narrates the story of Horton the Elephant, who discovers a speck of dust containing tiny people called the Whos. Horton must protect the Whos from a world of naysayers and dangers, and he must also guard an abandoned egg that's been left in his care by the irresponsible Mayzie La Bird. Although Horton faces ridicule, danger and a trial, the intrepid Gertrude McFuzz never loses faith in him. Ultimately, the powers of friendship, loyalty, family and community are challenged and emerge triumphant! Auditions are open to all 4th and 5th grade students. All students who audition and attend rehearsals will be in the Seussical Jr. cast and crew. Ms. Rigsby and Mr. Butler will use auditions to help in assigning parts and creating ensemble groups. Auditions will be held on September 13th and 14th. The participation fee is $50.00 per student. Scholarships are available upon request. Please make your payment online. The registration form can be downloaded here.
