The Desert Biome

What is it like there?

In the desert there are two seasons. One is wet and the other is dry. Each year less than 10 inches of rain falls. Did you know that in the desert it can get up to 120 degrees? There are sand storms. Some days each year rain falls in the desert. Did you know that some deserts are cold? Most deserts in the world are very hot.

In the desert the landscape is dry and very sandy. It is flat, rock, hilly and mountainous.

Did you know that animals and plants in the desert can live on very little water?

There are lots of cactuses and some trees.

Where are they located?

Where in the world?

There are lots of places in the world where deserts are like:

  • north America
  • south America
  • Asia
  • Africa
  • Australia

Those are all of the deserts in the world!!!

How do plants survive?

Plants in the desert learned to live in a dry place.

Did you know that some plants store water in their leaves, stems and roots and some plants depend on the rain to grow? Some desert plants collect water from the ground and some plants have hard seeds until rain falls.

Cactus plants have needles on them to keep away animals from getting the water that they store inside of them. Cactuses roots spread out and collect water in very large areas.

Animal Life

How do animals survive?

In the desert the animals can learn to live without water for a very long time.

Desert animals are nocturnal to avoid the hot sun. Some animals will bury themselves underground during the dry season then they will come out when the rain comes. Few large animals live in the desert like camels!

Did you know that camels can live without water longer than other animals in the desert. Camels collect water from their breath as they inhale, have humps on their back, they store fat in their humps, bodies burn fat for energy and lots more!
