Dirty Face

By Shel Silverstein

Poem: Text

Where did you get such a dirty face,

My darling dirty-faced child?

I got it from crawling along in the dirt

And biting two buttons off Jeremy’s shirt.

I got it from chewing the roots of a rose

And digging for clams in the yard with my nose.

I got it from peeking into a dark cave

And painting myself like a Navajo brave.

I got it from playing with coal in the bin

And signing my name in cement with my chin.

I got if from rolling around on the rug

And giving the horrible dog a big hug.

I got it from finding a lost silver mine

And eating sweet blackberries right off the vine.

I got it from ice cream and wrestling and tears

And from having more fun than you’ve had in years.

Poem: Main Idea

The main idea of this poem is to show that children seem to always have some sort of something on their face. Wether that be dirt, food, or something completely random. This poem also shows the adventurous and creative side that children posses. Lastly, this poem says that children can have more fun that any adult just by engaging in the simplest activities.

Why I chose this poem

I chose this poem because it reminded my a lot of myself as a child. I was the little boy that could take a bath and be completely covered in mess five minutes afterwards. My mom hated that quality of mine. I was always extremely adventurous as a child. My imagination was always running at full speed.

Song: Kids by MGMT

You were a child

Crawling on your knees toward it

Making momma so proud

But your voice is too loud

We like to watch you laughing

You pick the insects off plants

No time to think of consequences

Control yourself

Take only what you need from it

A family of trees wanting to be haunted

Control yourself

Take only what you need from it

A family of trees wanting to be haunted

The water is warm

But it's sending me shivers

A baby is born

Crying out for attention

Memories fade

Like looking through a fogged mirror

Decisions too

Decisions are made and not bought

But I thought this wouldn't hurt a lot

I guess not

[Chorus x3]

rylin and soren rolling in the dirt! kids will be kids!

Connection between the song and the poem

The connection between the poem and the song is that both have to do with the imagination of kids. In the poem it talks about a kid exploring a silver mine and in the song it talks about how a certain kid looks for bugs on plants. In the poem and the song it also talks about the innocence that children have. In the song it says, "no time to think of consequence" and in the poem it says that the child explores a silver mine, which could potentially be dangerous. Meaning, the kids in both the poem and the song are only doing what they do because they think it is fun.

My Poem

Where oh where did I leave my dinosaur?

Did I leave it behind the chair,

Or did he run off somewhere?

Where oh where did I leave my dinosaur?

It looks like I am going to have to go explore for my dinosaur.

Did he go on a swim in the lake?

I sure hope he did't get eaten by a snake!

Where oh where is my dinosaur?

I asked my mom but she said not to worry because he's fake.

He might be fake but he's my friend anyway.
