Dirty Face
By Shel Silverstein
Poem: Text
Where did you get such a dirty face,
My darling dirty-faced child?
I got it from crawling along in the dirt
And biting two buttons off Jeremy’s shirt.
I got it from chewing the roots of a rose
And digging for clams in the yard with my nose.
I got it from peeking into a dark cave
And painting myself like a Navajo brave.
I got it from playing with coal in the bin
And signing my name in cement with my chin.
I got if from rolling around on the rug
And giving the horrible dog a big hug.
I got it from finding a lost silver mine
And eating sweet blackberries right off the vine.
I got it from ice cream and wrestling and tears
And from having more fun than you’ve had in years.
Poem: Main Idea
Why I chose this poem
Song: Kids by MGMT
You were a child
Crawling on your knees toward it
Making momma so proud
But your voice is too loud
We like to watch you laughing
You pick the insects off plants
No time to think of consequences
[Chorus:]
Control yourself
Take only what you need from it
A family of trees wanting to be haunted
Control yourself
Take only what you need from it
A family of trees wanting to be haunted
The water is warm
But it's sending me shivers
A baby is born
Crying out for attention
Memories fade
Like looking through a fogged mirror
Decisions too
Decisions are made and not bought
But I thought this wouldn't hurt a lot
I guess not
[Chorus x3]
Connection between the song and the poem
My Poem
Did I leave it behind the chair,
Or did he run off somewhere?
Where oh where did I leave my dinosaur?
It looks like I am going to have to go explore for my dinosaur.
Did he go on a swim in the lake?
I sure hope he did't get eaten by a snake!
Where oh where is my dinosaur?
I asked my mom but she said not to worry because he's fake.
He might be fake but he's my friend anyway.
