Positivity Project: OPM2 Supporting Others When They Struggle
This week during P2, students will return to the Other People Matter Mindset to understand why supporting others when they struggle is important. Students will understand how they grow and make themselves better by helping others. Our Cheetahs are learning so much through their P2 Lessons each day, be sure to ask your students about their favorite character strength!
"If you're not making someone else's life better, then you're wasting your time. Your life will become better by making other lives better."

Book Swap at Literacy Night
Our Annual Book Swap will take place from 5:30 – 7:00, November 7th in the Cafeteria.
Clear off your bookshelves and donate books you no longer need. There will be drop boxes in the lobby starting on Monday 10/14 until Friday 11/1 with a sign-up sheet to record the child’s name, teacher and number of books donated. We are looking for books Pre-K to middle school level. (Please, no board books.) For the adult crowd, parenting, cooking, educational or crafting books are also accepted.
For every book you donate, your child can come to the book swap on November 7th during Literacy Night and pick out a “new” book. (Maximum of 5 “new” books, no maximum number for donations!) After the book swap, teachers will have an opportunity to choose from any remaining books for their classroom libraries. Anything else will be donated to the Wake County “Wake Up and Read” Program.
This year you may bring your donated books to the event to swap but remember the maximum “new” books you can pick out is 5! Email hsesncpta@gmail.com with questions!

Parent Communication
We usually send a message to parents weekly and we want to be sure you receive it. The district only uses email/text (and not automated voice calls) to share non-urgent information with parents. If we don't have a current email or text number on file, you will not get this critical district message. Even more important, if your child gets hurt or becomes sick and we don't have updated numbers, we won't be able to contact you. Please reach out to our Data Manager, Annette Ligons in the office at aligons@wcpss.net to share any updates or send in a note to your child's teacher.

Volunteers
Volunteers are welcome at HSES! If you plan to volunteer, you must be approved using the guidelines below. Now is a great opportunity to come into the school and register! If you have any additional questions, please contact the front office.
- All new volunteer applicants must register and have an approved criminal record check prior to engaging in volunteer work.
- All continuing volunteers approved for the 2019-2020 school year MUST reactivate as a volunteer no later than 4:00 p.m. on October 31, 2019. Reactivating volunteers may go to any WCPSS work site where they can register through www.wcpss.net by selecting the Community tab, and then selecting Volunteer Registration. Current volunteers, who provide a valid email address, will receive an email 15 days and 30 days prior to the expiration of their volunteer status reminding them to reactivate.
- Guests: Visitors who are never left alone with students are considered guests. They do not need background checks. Typical examples would include speakers, presenters and community members/parents attending a school event.
- Volunteers: Visitors who may be alone with students at any point do require background checks. There are no "levels" of volunteer status. You are either a volunteer who may be alone with students or you aren't. Typical examples range from a community volunteer who reads with a child to an overnight chaperone, as well as field day workers, testing proctors, and volunteer coaches. The same background check is done for every type of volunteer.
