Dr. Delic Lloyd's Visit:
Dr. Lloyd is an outside consultant with an area of expertise in school improvement. She worked closely with the administrative team at Sam Houston helping them get out of IR. This year she is supporting a large group of schools. I am grateful we were chosen to receive her support, knowledge, and guidance this year as we move forward. Wednesday was her second visit to Vogel.
She had many positive things to say about you and our students:
- Common planning is evident in teams. Teachers were covering the same TEKS within PLC teams with allowances for personal choice of delivery.
- Students were engaged in small groups. Students knew expectations of small groups and had their undivided attention on their teacher and the work they were completing.
- Systems were in place to help students in stations/independent work (anchor charts, sentence stems, CHAMPS)
- Students are beginning to track attendance and academic progress. She loved the data tracking binders!
- We have a positive school climate. Students behaved appropriately during classroom change, flexible seating created a comfortable environment within classrooms, and respectful teacher/student and student/student talk could be heard.
A few things to tweak in our instructional practices are:
- More consistency with small groups in all classrooms.
- Creating systems that allow students to talk to one another and the teacher about what they are learning. The person doing the most talking is doing the most learning. ;)
Recess Expectations:
Thank you for revisiting hallway, cafeteria, and recess expectations. The students are doing a great job following your directions. The one area that the Foundations committee found that could use a tiny tweak is coming in from recess.
- Duty teachers- Please make sure the students are on a level zero when their teachers come outside to pick up.
- Homeroom teachers- Please make sure you continue to enforce the level zero expectation as the students stand and enter the building. This will allow for quicker transitions back to class.
February Make-Up Hours:
All professional staff who were employed by the district on September 19th are required to make up 7 hours of work prior to February 17th. If all hours are not made up and documented, staff members will be required to come to work on the 17th. All staff members who have the required hours completed before the February 17th date do not have to report to work on the 17th. The binder for make up hour documentation is on the shelf in my office. Please let me know if you have questions or concerns.
New Additions:
Our new poster maker and shredder have arrived! The shredder is up and running in the workroom. The poster maker still needs to be unpacked and installed by district personnel. Hopefully that will happen soon!
Daily Attendance:
We are almost at 100% attendance taking at 10:00. I am so impressed by your willingness to troubleshoot issues and get the job done. Thank you for doing such an amazing job making sure your attendance it is on time. The effort is noticed and much appreciated!!!
Walkthrough Tickets:
We will continue celebrating the great instruction we see by handing out raffle tickets for walkthroughs. Some specific instructional practices we will be looking for are:
* small group instruction
* students receiving feedback from one another/student engagement (turn and talk, four corners, talking chips etc..)
* randomization (popsicle stickers, spinners, colored cards, etc...)
* using CHAMPS
If you have something exciting going on, invite us in. We'd love to come!
