Congratulations March Graduates!!!
As we near the end of the 2nd Trimester, we want to congratulate our March graduates!!! We are incredibly proud of our Seniors who have completed their Michigan Merit Curriculum requirements and will return in June for our graduation ceremony and official celebrations. Way to go Panthers!!!
In the meantime, all of our Seniors have had the privilege of working with Nick Beaudry, Supervisor of College and Career Programs from St. Clair County RESA. Nick serves as a vital connection between high school and the many possibilities that lie ahead. Together with the rest of the Blue Water College Access Network team, Nick provides valuable resources that help assure that our graduates are prepared for a lifetime of learning, growth, and success. Be sure to check out the BWCAN website and newsletter for more information.
Learning Happens Everywhere.
Riverview East High School strives to enable students to understand the world around them and talents within them so that they can become fulfilled individuals and active, compassionate citizens. These efforts do not end when students leave school (or log out) for the day. Student-driven efforts provide opportunities for our students to connect with and contribute to our world and community and well as develop a greater sense of purpose and meaning.
Several years in the making, River Rec Teen Zone is a student-created youth center located at 300 Broadway in Marine City. After several false starts and obstacles created by the current health pandemic; RRTZ is preparing for a Grand-Opening celebration and the launch of several exciting youth programs. RRTZ will serve as a safe space where youth from our region can work with adult mentors on everything from academic support and career exploration to a youth-driven community art project and fun and games. Follow River Rec Teen Zone on Facebook, Twitter and www.riverrecteenzone.com to stay in the loop. RRTZ is also in search of adult advisors to serve on our Board of Directors. Contact Jason Stier at jstier@ecsd.us if you or someone you know is interested in getting involved.
REHS Students Generating Ideas
Generator Z is an ideas lab for teens and afterschool providers to reimagine the future of afterschool in Southeast Michigan and Western New York. When schools shut down in the shadow of the pandemic, so did many places, spaces, and activities surrounding school. With so much uncertainty, who has the answers? Teens do! Teens are the experts of their own lives and afterschool providers are the source of afterschool opportunities. Together, they drive the brightest possible future.
Together with the Ralph C. Wilson Jr. Foundation and Lakeshore Connections, Generator-Z selected one thousand teens across both regions to become Generators, sharing ideas and insight. Afterschool providers in Southeast Michigan and Western New York are now invited to learn from Generators, turning insight into action.
Recent REHS graduate, Genevieve Gohl, was selected as a generator and is sharing her story along with those of other youth in helping shape and guide the future of afterschool opportunities. Riverview East High School and River Rec Teen Zone will be working collaboratively with Generator-Z in launching an ambitious Youth-driven Community Arts Initiative. Stay tuned for more to come.

Riverview East High School Staff Spotlight
In his signature purple CROCS, Monte Iafrate is a force of love, encouragement, and positivity who is always at the ready to welcome and support anyone who enters Riverview East. His daily “chop, chop, wicky, wick” reminder echoes down the hallway encouraging students to get to class on time.
Once in class, students are immersed in a world where everything is connected to SCIENCE!!! During the pandemic, (even while at times having to teach in his classroom, from home, via a virtual connection), Monte helped guide and inform students of the science behind the pandemic and how curiosity, research, and sharing of information would ultimately help us all overcome this major life event. Capitalizing on current events and student interests, Monte helps facilitate learning and discovery through engaging courses ranging from Forensics to Project Science, where students are encouraged to create their own scientific discoveries, experiments and findings.
Beyond the content, Monte teaches and embeds empathy, kindness, hard-work, and determination in every lesson. His “Ramones Thursdays” and “Love is my Religion Fridays” are just a sampling of the routines he creates with his students that promote positive relationships and encourage student agency. Over the years, Monte has become not only many students’ favorite teacher, but often...favorite person. His relentless pursuit in helping students discover and celebrate their true selves and true potential is one of the things that make Riverview East feel like family.
A Peek into a Young 5's Classroom
The Young 5’s program offers young learners the gift of a year. These students will get a whole school year of learning, growing, and adjusting to the demands of the school day. They will do fun hands on age appropriate activities. They will develop their social skills, academic skills, and fine motor skills. All of these skills are needed to be successful in Kindergarten and grades beyond.
This month, students in Mrs. Guzowski’s class learned about solids and liquids. The students explored colors, and mixed different color liquid to see what new colors they could make. They had a fun Valentine's Day party, as well as making snow ice cream. The students also got to celebrate with a 100 Day celebration. This has been a busy and fun month for the Young 5’s class.
