Behavior/Classroom Management Corner: TRAUMA INFORMED TEACHING STRATEGIES
- "Students can't learn if they don't feel safe. What small changes are you willing to try in your classroom to foster a sense of safety among traumatized students?
- Think about one of your students who struggles with behavior. How could you help him "switch the channel" when he is upset?
- Do you routinely share - and exchange ideas about - what's working with a traumatized student? Howe could you better improve lines of communication across the whole support team?

Data Cycle
Data Cycles should always begin when you start a new unit of study. Look at your priority standards and begin with step one. Analyze your data to determine next steps. It's one thing to determine the areas in which your students are struggling. It's another thing altogether to figure out what to do about it. Looking at data once or twice a year isn't enough. Using data to improve student achievement requires a commitment to ongoing cycles of data analysis, action planning, collecting evidence, and using it to adjust instruction. You should then be monitoring and adjusting throughout the cycle.
Here is a checklist that you can use as you work your way through the Data Cycle Process with your team. Below is the Data Cycle Process chart to help make this process a little easier. When you begin teaching a new priority standard, start with Step One and work your way through this process. Document your work on your digital Data Cycle Chart in your Google Shared Grade-Level Data Team folder.
Data Cycle Process Step One Collect and Chart Data Administer assessment Divide student performance into categories (Proficient, Close to Proficient, Basic, Below Basic) Add to your Digital Data Chart and Data Cycle Wall in the Commons Step Two Analyze Data & Prioritize Needs Identify and prioritize student needs for each level of performance Make inferences about student learning Step Three Set, Review, or Revise SMART Goals Use data from Steps 1 and 2 to determine SMART Goal statement. Step Four Select Common Instructional Strategies Brainstorm, share, & discuss research-based instructional strategies that will have an immediate impact on student learning Agree upon how to put that strategy into place for each performance level of students Step Five Determine Results Indicators Determine what will be seen if the strategy is successful Decide what common formative assessment will be used to check progress
Turn & Talk
“Language is a child’s most powerful learning tool. Within all of the instructional contexts that are part of a comprehensive language and literacy curriculum, learning is mediated by oral language”. Fountas & Pinnell (2011)
Turn and Talk is an oral language support strategy that provides students scaffolded interactions to formulate ideas and share their thinking with another student.
When Turn and Talk is used, all students have a chance to share their thinking in a low-risk setting. Verbalizing their thinking scaffolds students' understanding and provides talk at a peer level, a model close to the language the student controls.
As with anything in the classroom, routines are very important in implementing structured conversational skills.
Determine strategic partners
Create an environment that provides partners close proximity for talk to occur
Set academic expectations
Determine a signal to come to whole group
Teach flexibility and problem solving
Expect students to use conversational moves/accountable talk and academic language. Listen in to formatively assess their understanding and share out learning you want to bring to the whole class. “Gambits” offer a positive way to help build your community of learners.
Clear visible partners that can be changed
easily on post-it notes

Don’t forget to visit your colleagues to see all the wonderful learning that goes on in our building! PT students rock! When you visit a classroom, please fill out a note card in my room with a positive comment on the learning that you observed. Remember, you will need to visit at least one classroom per quarter. Put the note card in the basket on top of my bookshelf so that I can mark your name off. Make sure that you put your name in the top left corner of the envelope so that I know who the card is from.
Come see me if you have any questions or concerns. Let me know how I can further support you and your students in your classroom.
You are Magnificent!
