'Tis the Season!

November 30, 2017

Well, Cardinals, we're on the brink of December! But while the weather slowly gets chillier, are hearts continue to be warmed by the truly amazing things we see you doing each day. Although it is important year-round, this time of the year has a way of reminding us more often of the importance of giving and doing for others. So while you are enjoying the sights and sounds of the season, remember to acknowledge the true spirit of the season as well...lend a hand or two, spread some cheer, be a light for those who might be lost. Trust us, you will feel rewarded too!

Paying it Forward

Earlier this week, a father of one of our students (who wishes to remain anonymous) came in to the main office on "Giving Tuesday" and asked if he could write a check to cover the lunch debts of all LHS students whose accounts had a negative balance. The debt total was over $500. This was such a wonderful, caring gesture, and a truly selfless act.

We thank this generous gentlemen for being a beacon to others and an inspiration for all of us to pay it forward!

Chem Club "Rocks" Geochemistry Exhibit

The LHS Chemistry Club was invited to exhibit at Princeton University Frick Chemistry Labs as part of the 2017 National Chemistry Week (NCW) "Chemistry Rocks!” Activities Night last month. This year's theme was Chemistry...It Rocks! Geochemistry. The night was not only a spectacular science scene, but a display of leadership, fun, honor, and camaraderie as well!

Eliza Wirkijowski, Hakim Hachicha and Ashwin Baskaran led students in designing an educational, hands on, fun geochemistry display, ultimately exhibiting it in front of 650 young people. At the suggestion of Neil Chopra, the students designed an 800-square foot maze of the layers of the earth (crust, mantle, and core), skyping with Princeton Geology students to help get their science right. Matthew Carson took the designs and made them into drafting quality plans to satisfy safety requirements. Several groups worked on the maze and created hands-on activities including a "Rock Buffet," "Rock Identification," and "Cake-Earth Surgery!" Additional leaders for the night included Syed Ali Rizvi, Laura Yuying Chang, Cameron Blackman, Mark Wisniewski, Neil Chopra, Rikki Kong, Jean Steel and Nadia Abromowitz.

Congrats to the entire Chemistry Club on your fantastic work!

Matt Davis, Jon Marbach and STEM Academy co-leader Gwenn Andahazy assisted (and kept the students safe)!

Fun Facts

Check out this snow-woman, built by residents of Bethel, Maine, which stood over 122 feet tall! She was so tall that her arms were made from pine trees and her eyelashes were made from skis. In fact, "Olympia" was just a few feet shy of the height of the Statue of Liberty!
