Grade 5
January 4th-8th
Welcome back!
Welcome back to school. We hope you all had a lovely and enjoyable break.
This week we welcomed Sofia Di Sette to Grade 5. She is in 5C with Ms Creed and her class.
Maths
This week we completed our fractions pre-assessment. The assessment informs us of a student's current understanding. It is used to plan a maths program that meets the needs of each child through differentiation.
Next week we will send the pre-assessment home for the students to show and discuss with their parents. Please do not be concerned if your child has many errors on the assessment.Often this is because it is a while since they covered the topic in Grade 4 and just need some revision, rather than having no understanding at all. Could you please take a look and record your discussion regarding your child's results in their communication book. The pre-assessment will also need to be returned back to school with the communication book.
Unit of Inquiry
This week we continued on with Where We Are in Place and Time. The students have been reading through texts and highlighting keywords. This has helped them to summarize a text in their own words. The students have also learned to reference their sources on a bibliography template given to them. The research and note-taking will help the students for the summative assessment which is writing a report and presentation on a device of their choice.
Upcoming Events
At the end of this month Grade 5 will be visiting the Museum of Islamic Art to do a workshop on astrolabes. A permission slip was sent home this week and must be returned by 15th January.
