Fulton Science Academy
ACCREDITED AND STEM CERTIFIED COLLEGE PREP GIFTED SCHOOL
Week of March 2, 2020
I hope everyone had a great weekend.
I am sure many of you saw that FSA held our first Amazing Shake competition last week. So much work went into making this event a reality and just as I am impressed with our students, I am equally impressed and inspired by our faculty. Countless hours went into making this an opportunity that our students will never forget and I can not wait until our school can have the opportunity to partake in this competition again. If you have not read about this amazing event, please make sure you read the blurb about it further down.
We have a lot happening, as always, so make sure you stay up to date and don't miss a thing happening here at FSA!
Introducing Our New Safety Officer
Welcome to our new Safety Officer, Mr Rick Evans! Mr Evans has many years of police experience and is excited to work in a school where he can impact students and families! Make sure to give him a warm FSA welcome! We look forward to everyone getting to know Mr. Evans!
"Greetings. My name is Frederick Evans, and I am the new Safety Officer at Fulton Science Academy. It is a pleasure to be here, and I look forward to working with everyone.
Allow me to tell you a little about myself. I was born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia. I later attended attended Fayette County High School, in Fayetteville, Georgia, where I graduated in 1982. I joined the U.S. Air Force in 1984, where I became a dental hygienist, and I was also cross trained as a field combat medic. I served a four year tour, most of which was served overseas.
My family has a long law enforcement history, so naturally I had an interest in law enforcement. After leaving the Air Force, I began my law enforcement career. I have a wide variety of experience spanning a twenty-one year period. I have worked as a patrol officer, a jail officer, a detective, and I have served in law enforcement supervision and management roles as well. I have had thousands of hours of training, and maintain a law enforcement certification. I am also a graduate of the Southern Police Institute, located in Louisville, Kentucky.
I am married with five children, and my wife and I currently serve in the Georgia Guard. I am also an ordained minister, and currently I am working towards my masters degree in ministry.
Again, I am pleased to be here with you all, and I look forward to working with you to provide a safe environment for each of your children. Feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns."
Due to popular request, we will be hosting a final information session for rising 9th grade families.

WE ARE THE STATE CHAMPIONS! FSA’s Middle School History Team goes undefeated at the state tournament
FSA’s Middle School History Team remained undefeated at the 2020 Georgia History Bowl State Championships on February 29th at Newnan High School. Eshaan B. (6th-grade), Alex R. (7th- grade), and Weston B. (8th-grade) broke tournament history by preventing a semi-final and quarter-final play-off round by winning all of their games. This championship qualifies our team to compete in the National History Bowl Championship Tournament this June in Chicago.
FSA’s Elementary History Team, Raghav P. (4th grade), Greyson H. (5th grade) and 6th-graders Nitish A. & Dheemant P., surprised their older opponents by placing third in the middle school division. There weren’t other elementary teams (teams composed of 5th and 6th graders) present at the state tournament, so the elementary school team had little choice but to face middle school teams consisting of mostly 7th and 8th graders. FSA’s elementary team tied Lost Mountain MS for the total number of game points; however, FSA’s elementary team beat Lost Mountain MS in a game by one question, outranking them to secure third place.
Many FSA students competed in six rounds of the Geography Bee. In the middle school division, Weston B. won second place and Alex R. won third place. In the elementary school division, Raghav won second place and Eshaan B. barely won third place due to a tie with Dheemant after the semi-final round. Both boys graciously agreed to share the third-place medal, but the tournament reader suggested a bonus question to decipher third and fourth place.
Coach Bennion commented, “It’s been rewarding to witness the dramatic improvements exhibited by these students, especially compared to their first practice. I believe the key to their success is their stellar teamwork.”
Way to go FSA MS & ES History Bowl Teams!

FSA Holds First AMAZING SHAKE Competition in School History
The Amazing Shake is a dynamic and exciting competition that rallies leaders and role models in a school’s community together to teach students about professional skills for success. Teaching students manners, discipline, respect, and how to conduct him or herself in a professional environment are all an important part of our academic program. In 5th grade at FSA, students learn the mechanics of a proper handshake and working the room so that they are able to present themselves exceptionally well for opportunities today and in the future. A BIG thank you to all of the professionals who joined us this morning for rounds 1 and 2 and Milton City Hall for hosting round 3! #fsacommunity #agreatdayatFSA @ Fulton Science Academy Private School
Round 1 was “The Gauntlet”.... During this round, each student goes through an obstacle course where each unique station is headed by a business leader who judges their performance in the real-world task on handshake firmness, eye contact, confidence, and more! We were so impressed with the professionalism of our 5th graders!
Round 2 “Work the Room” challenged our students to mingle with a group of professionals as if they are at networking event. We were so impressed with the conversations we overheard during this short 20 minute round
A huge congratulations to all of our fifth grade students. We were so impressed with your poise and professional skills during this competition. We can’t wait to see the AMAZING things you will all be doing in the future!

NHS & NJHS Induction Ceremony
We were lucky to have as the speaker for the ceremony Mr. Ian Evens, who is the owner and head instructor of Cumming Martial Arts. He is also the founder of the art of Yondo Jiu-Jitsu. He has worked closely with students in various leadership position a in school and out. His presentation was on the 4 p to success and he challenged students to raise their game always trying to do better. Shihan Evans has consistently turned out not just black belts to the rank of Shodan, but also participants in various college honors programs, presidential scholar candidates for universities in and out of the state of Georgia. His students excel academically and within the school environment, competitively involved in school athletic teams ranging from baseball to wrestling, musical theatre and such groups such as DECA. His martial arts students also compete with outstanding results in regional, national and international competitions. He leads by example and requires his students to be passionate, to fail, to be able to get back up more determined than before and to find their niche. Cumming Martial Arts was recently named Best of Forsyth 2020, for Martial Arts.
The ceremony was a success and FSA is proud of our brilliant students. Congratulations to the new members!!
Crayola Color Cycle
Our school is participating in a program called Crayola ColorCycle. This program was created to teach students the importance of recycling and saving the environment. Globally, most waste is currently disposed of in some form of a landfill. 37% of waste is disposed of in some form of a landfill, 8 percent of which is disposed of in sanitary landfills with landfill gas collection systems. 17% of air pollution is from waste burning, and Crayola used to burn the plastic increasing air pollution. So now instead of burning the old products, in this program Crayola collects donations of markers from any brand from schools all over the country and recycles them to make new products. So find any used or dried product with or without a cap and drop it off in the bin in the front lobby.
Our Elementary Students celebrated Dr. Suess Day Today!
Read Across America Day, also known as Dr. Seuss Day, is a yearly observance in the USA inaugurated by the NEA (National Education Association). It is held on the school day that is nearest to March 2nd, Dr Seuss' birthday. Theodor Seuss Geisel was an American artist, book publisher, animator, poet, a political cartoonist as well as an author. He is best known for authoring over 60 children’s books.

FSA Senior Beta Club is Putting Together Military Care Packages & Hosting an Art Night to Make Cards for Members
The Military Care Package (MCP) Drive is a project returning from last year, in which the HS Beta Club collects toiletries, food, and other donations to support the US military. As a fun, more personal activity, Art Night gives students the opportunity to write or draw 'thank you' cards and artwork for our troops, which will be sent in with the rest of the drive. The MCP Drive runs through March 12 and donation boxes can be found in the lobby by the stairs. In the mornings (7:30-8:00), HS Beta members will present at the donation table, though donations at any other time are welcome. Art Night is planned to take place in the cafeteria on March 5 from 4:10-6:00. Though Art Night is marketed towards elementary-age students, the teacher volunteer- and HS Beta-supervised event is open to older students and family members. In terms of other events, HS Beta completes a number of drives and community projects each year, though our primary recurring events are the Rivers Alive Cleanup, Art Night, and the MCP Drive.

MARCH MENU FROM ATL LUNCH CO. & RECIPE CONTEST
Is Your Child Too Sick to Go to School?
Early in the morning it is often difficult to make a decision about whether or not your child is sick enough to stay home from school. With minor symptoms, you often cannot tell whether he is going to get better or worse during the course of the day.
When you keep your child home, make sure that your child's school knows how to reach you during the day, and that there is a back-up plan and phone number on file if the school cannot reach you.
The main reasons for keeping your child home are:
He's too sick to be comfortable at school.
He might spread a contagious disease to other children.
As a rule of thumb a child should stay home if he has:
A fever
Vomited
Diarrhea
A very frequent cough
Persistent pain (ear, stomach, etc.)
A widespread rash
Most of these problems need to be discussed with your child's pediatrician to determine if an office visit is needed. (If your child has frequent complaints of pain that cause school absence, you should consider the possibility that your child is intentionally avoiding school. Bring this to the attention of the child"s doctor before a great deal of school has been missed.)
On the other hand, children who don't have a fever and only have a mild cough, runny nose or other cold symptoms can be sent to school without any harm to themselves or others. The following guidelines may help in your decision process:
1. A runny nose is the way many children respond to pollen, dust or a cold virus. Minor cold or allergy symptoms should not be a reason to miss school. Many healthy children have as many as six colds per year, especially in the early school years. If the mucous has color you may want to call your doctor.
2. Coughing, especially if it is persistent during the day, can indicate a worsening of cold or allergy symptoms. It may be a sign of a secondary infection (e.g., sinusitis, pneumonia), which may require medical treatment. It may also indicate mild asthma. If your child's cough is worse than you might expect with a common cold, you need to consult your child's doctor. You should do so immediately if the child is not acting normal, has a fever or has any difficulty breathing.
3. Diarrhea and vomiting make children very uncomfortable. A single episode of watery diarrhea probably warrants not going to school. It could be very embarrassing and uncomfortable for your child to have another episode while in school. If diarrhea or vomiting are frequent or are accompanied by fever, rash or general weakness, consult your child's doctor and keep the child out of school for 24 hours with no vomiting, diarrhea or fever without the use of fever-reducing medications.
4. Strep throat and scarlet fever are two highly contagious conditions caused by the same bacterial infection. They usually arrive with a sudden complaint of sore throat and fever and often stomachache and headache. With scarlet fever, a rash usually appears within 12 to 48 hours. A child with these symptoms should see his doctor for diagnosis and treatment and should remain out of school until he is without fever and has been on antibiotics for 24 hours.
5. Pinkeye, or conjunctivitis, can be caused by a virus, bacteria or allergy. The first two are very contagious. The eye will be reddened and a cloudy or yellow discharge is usually present. The eye may be sensitive to light. Consult with your child's doctor to see if antibiotic eye drops are needed. Again, your child should stay home until symptoms subside and he has been on antibiotic eye drops at least 24 hours or until the doctor recommends your child return to school.
6. Middle ear infections can cause great discomfort and often fever, but are not contagious to others. Your child should see his doctor for diagnosis and treatment and should stay at home if he has fever or pain.
7. Flu is a contagious virus that usually occurs in the winter months. Symptoms include body aches, high fever, chills, congestion, sore throat and, in some children, vomiting. Your child should stay home until these symptoms improve, usually five to seven days. Consult your child's doctor for treatment suggestions to make your child more comfortable.
8. Impetigo is a staph or strep infection that creates a red, oozing blister-like area that can appear anywhere on the body or face. A honey-colored crust may appear on the area. It can be passed to others by direct contact. Consult you child's doctor for treatment and length of time your child should remain out of school, especially if the area cannot be covered.
9. Chickenpox is a highly contagious viral illness. It causes fever and an itchy rash, which spreads quickly all over the body, changing from red bumps to blister-like lesions, then scabs. Your child needs to stay home until all bumps are scabbed and no new bumps have appeared for two days. Your child is contagious at least two days before the rash starts, so you need to let the school and playmates know, and consult your child's doctor for treatment of symptoms. A vaccine is available for children who have not yet had chickenpox and is required for kindergarten. The vaccine will also be required for all new sixth graders who have not yet had chickenpox.
10. Scabies and lice brought into a school can quickly produce an epidemic of itching and scratching. Scabies are tiny insects that burrow into the skin and cause severe itching. Lice are tiny wingless insects, like ticks, that thrive on the warm scalps of children and cause itching. Both should be treated immediately, with advice from your child's doctor. Children need to stay home from school until head lice are dead and until nits or eggs are removed with a special fine comb. Head checks should continue for 10 to 14 days. Caution your child against sharing combs, brushes, hats or other clothing. In the case of scabies, children should stay home for 24 hours after treatment.
All of these illnesses can be spread easily, both in school and in the family. Keep in mind that hand washing is the single most important thing you can do and teach your child to do to help prevent the spread of infections.
Whenever there is a doubt in your mind about sending your child to school, consult your child's doctor before doing so. A phone consultation may be all that is necessary, or your child's doctor may need to see the child in the office.
