A Look At Reading Groups
Mrs. Cripe's Google Classroom code is: s7nb34u
We have been busy checking progress during groups. It's exciting to see the growth students have made since the beginning of the year. More and more, students are broadening their repertoire of strategies to use when encountering unknown words. Rather than relying on a single main strategy, they are using more of the following:
- breaking apart larger words
- finding familiar words within words
- sounding out
- thinking about the story to get an idea of the vocabulary they will see
- skipping the word
- going back to the beginning of the sentence (we call this "getting a running start")
Below is information regarding the Read by Grade 3 Law that pertains to 3rd graders:
In an effort to boost reading achievement, Michigan lawmakers passed the Read by Grade Three Law. To help more students reach reading proficiency by the end of third grade, the law requires extra support be provided to students K-3 who are not reading at grade level.
The law also states that a child may be retained in 3rd grade if they are more than one grade level behind in reading by the end of 3rd grade. Letters from the state will be sent to families of students scoring below grade level on the English Language Arts portion of the MSTEP upon completion of the assessment in May.
Please be aware that at the beginning of the 2019-2020 school year, any student identified as at-risk in reading based on i-Ready and STAR Reading data, and/or parent or teacher concerns, was tested one-on-one by the Reading Interventionist. If they qualified, the student was given an Individual Reading Improvement Plan (for those more than one grade level behind) and they have been receiving extra reading support in the form of Leveled Literacy Intervention four times each week.
Please note, the M-Step score is the criteria the state uses to inform parents, however, the decision to retain a student will take into account more than one piece of data. The law does allow parents and guardians to ask that their student be promoted to fourth grade in some cases. If you have questions about how best to support your child, please consider attending the literacy event above on February 16. Reading at Home
While assessing, it's no surprise that the greatest gains have been made by students who are practicing outside of school. Thank you to families for encouraging your child to read and read what they love! Your support is apprecicated!
Please continue to encourage your child to sign into Literacy Footprints on a frequent basis. Reading at home is an essential part of their growth as a reader. Thank you for all you do to keep your child reading.
A few of the online reading options out there:
Book Recommendations
Try out these new and classic books and let me know what you think! As always, if your child has a favorite, please let me know and I will include it in the newsletter.
Focus: Questions to Engage Readers
Reading requires continually thinking about what you are reading, asking questions to define a purpose, and making connections.
Encourage your child to ask questions like:
Why did they do that?
What do they mean when they say that?
I wonder what brought them here?
How is this like something else I have seen, read, or done?
Challenge of the Month: Punctuation
You may want to do the first sentences to demonstrate.
Here are some examples to get you started:
The boy, who was finally waking up, made his way to the kitchen.
Dogs, naturally pack animals, enjoy being with their owners.
We had to go to the store to get vegetables, bread, eggs, and fruit.
Help! Fire!
It's true, isn't it?
Kelly, with great excitement, prepared to watch the fireworks.
