What is Bullying?

Bullying is repetitive, unwanted, aggressive behavior among school aged children. Bullying can be verbal, physical, and even over the internet (cyberbullying). Harassment caused by bullying has negatively impacted many children across the world. Almost 30% of students are either bullies or victims of bullying.

Victims

Each year, over 3.2 million students are bullied. 90% of 4th through 8th graders report being victims of bullying. 28% of students from 6th to 12th grade have experienced bullying. Comparatively, 20% of high school students have been victims of bullying. Bully victims are 2 out of 9 times more likely to consider suicide than non-victims. No one should consider suicide, and those who do need help immediately.

Help from School?

1 in 4 teachers see nothing wrong with bullying and only intervene 4% of the time. More than 67% of students believe that schools don't take the required action in cases of bullying. Schools need to work on this because students are always told to seek help from adults, mainly teachers and counselors. However, if they themselves don't help that much, who should the victims go to for help?

The Impacts of Bullying on Education

Victims of bullying are severely negatively impacted by bullying. Every day, about 160,000 students skip school in the fear of intimidation by other students. It is very sad to know that such a statistic is so high. 15% of all student absenteeism is related to fears of being bullied at school. Also, 1 out of every 10 student that drops out of high school does so due to repeated bullying.

Stand Up and Speak Out

As a community, we need to educate our children and students about the consequences of bullying. Children need to learn to speak out and stand up for others who are being bullied instead of becoming silent bystanders. 56% of students have personally witnessed some type of bullying.
