Juniors: SAT or ACT's...the basics:
*If you are looking to go to college for a medical or science based major you should strongly consider taking the ACT's since there is a science component.
*Some students take both as a means of score comparison while others take the same test twice.
*Colleges who require standardized testing will accept either/or.
*If you took the pre-ACT's or the pre-SAT's check our your scores. How did you do? What do you need to study/work on to increase your score?
Do I need to take them?
*Not all colleges require you to submit test scores and if you are planning on going for a year or two to a community college you may not need to take them. HOWEVER, it is always strongly recommended that you do for a variety of reasons. The most pertinent is to leave your options open in case you change your mind on where you want to go now or in the next couple of years.
*Fairtest.org provides you a list of colleges who do not require SAT/ACT's but it is recommended that you DO NOT select your colleges based off this list alone.
How do I study?
*Each test has Free practice tests on their websites and there are often paper copies in your school counseling offices.
*You can get practice and study books at libraries and bookstores
*Khan Academy online can help you study for the SAT's
*There are lots of free resources out there. You can pay for tutors, prep classes and other study materials but you should be able to access most of these things for free.
How do I register:
*You need to plan ahead as you typically need to register a month or so in advance of the test date.
*if you qualify for Free or Reduced lunch you can take the test for free but will need to get a voucher number from your sending school counseling office.

The Childhood Education & Human Services program learns about human development over the lifespan. We focus on infants, toddlers and preschool children's development over the first part of the year. Learning the stages of growth allows students to understand children's behavior and support their learning at a developmentally appropriate level. Students learn daily care routines, classroom management, lesson planning and behavior guidance. Students also learn how to observe children to evaluate their understanding and adapt their teaching. Each student is working on creating a learning portfolio on a child in our preschool. Through this visual record of the year students show the learning that the preschool child has participated in through the program.
The Childhood Education and Human Services program has been getting hands on experience running our onsite preschool program for 3 to 5 year olds. The students have been rotating through as the teacher of the day, presenting lessons on famous artists, children's authors and are beginning a unit on diversity. As part of our diversity unit, we recently had a class potluck lunch where students each made a traditional dish from the country they are studying. The students are currently involved in their second rotation at local daycare centers. They visit infant and toddler classroom each week to gain experience with younger children and being in a childcare workplace environment.
This spring we will begin learning about the care of older adults. We will study the stages of later life and develop activities to work with older adults. We will then visit several adult care facilities and provide a morning of activities including crafts, bingo, and stories. We will also participate in trainings on Alzheimer's and Dementia. Elder care is a fast growing portion of the Human Services field and our program is growing in this area of learning.
