Reading and Writing

Dear CLES Families,

Welcome to the 2nd addition of our Curriculum Corner. As a parent and an educator, one of the most common questions that I face is about writing. Should my child still be having spelling mistakes? Is it appropriate for a 2nd grader to have letter reversals? What does a 4th grade essay look like? Our County has done a fantastic job of providing detailed curriculum resources for parents. Have you visited the the "Family and Community Resources" page? If not, please see the following link: https://hcpss.instructure.com/courses/34453/pages/grade-prek-star-language-arts-overview

These pages have what your child will learn in every grade level as well as supplemental resources for you to use at home. I strongly encourage our families to review these resources!

If you are like me, sometimes it is easier when I can review a few resources at a time. In an effort to make some of the resources easier to find, I am also putting a link here to samples of what writing looks like at every grade level. We provided these resources a few years ago at a parent writing night. I hope you find these valuable when trying to determine your child's writing strengths and weaknesses.

Over the last two years, our focus has been the implementation of the Daily Five and Guided Reading. As many of you know, the more our children read and write, the better they will get at both. In our implementation of the Daily Five/Guided Reading, we are providing children an opportunity to read and write every day. I know families lives can get very busy with sports, music and homework, and we put pressure on ourselves to get in extra reading and writing. As the school year begins, we will take on the task of providing that time for reading and writing daily to help ease the burden at night. We will still have homework for reading, but your child will get a lot of practice every day!

Arrival and Dismissal - New Procedures

In case you missed it, please see the new arrival and dismissal procedures sent out last week. In collaboration with the transportation office, we developed new procedures to ensure a safe and efficient arrival and dismissal process. Click the link for detailed information.

Reminder: Please update your Family File!

As we get closer and closer to the first day of school, please ensure correct contact information in your family file in case of an emergency and to help us send students home the correct way. This will also allow you to then see your child's homeroom teacher as of August 30th. Even if information has not changed, you must still go on and submit that the information is correct.

For more detailed information, visit the hcpss.org or click on this link.

Missed my back to school letter with details on the first days back and more!
