Thompson Friday Forecast

Summer Edition #1 - June 14, 2019

From the Principal...Steve Morrill

First and Last…...Happy first week of summer to all! Last week at Thompson was bittersweet as we not only said goodbye to our 8th graders heading to high school and our 6th and 7th graders headed to summer, we also said goodbye to the Haines building as a middle school. Haines and the people who have worked here over the years have served this community well. Memories of this building and the people who spent time here will endure. Just like you, I am eager to see what the next chapter will be for the former Haines Middle School.

We spent much of last Friday saying goodbyes, signing yearbooks, experiencing “last day” activities, and celebrating student accomplishments. I would like to take a moment to acknowledge a few significant Thompson Middle School student achievements, starting with academics.

The following 8th graders maintained straight A’s throughout their 3 years at the middle school. What a huge accomplishment! Congratulations to:

  • Jordyn Chandler

  • Ella Roth

  • Kaitlyn Smith

  • Katrina Gass

  • Connor Glanzman

  • Alyssa Hughes

  • Isabella Najera

  • Ava Goettel

  • Caden Johnson

  • Brenna Jun

  • Robyn Meador

  • Henry White

  • Kara Claussner

  • Sumaiya Farook

  • Adeline Grimm

  • Brooke Klint

  • Ieva Sapiega

Last Friday morning, the St. Charles American Legion presented their prestigious award to Molly Denz, Mitch Garcia, and Jackson Belich.

Additionally, our 8th grade team Citizenship Awards were presented to:

  • Team 8-1 - Ty Landrowski and Audrey Kruk

  • Team 8-2 - Beatrice Carlile and Nikhil Gupta

  • Team 8-3 - Lauren Balster and Jackson Belich

  • Team 8-4 - John Gleason and Hazel Hernandez

  • Team 8-5 - Kara Claussner and Patrick Connolly

In the area of performing music, Amy Backer Memorial Music Awards were presented to Max McClure, Brynn Mitchell, and Emily Watanapongse.

Each year students are asked to submit a famous quote which they believe best represents what the 8th grade class would like to leave their middle school friends. This year’s Legacy Quote, suggested by Kaleb Garcia is: “You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose. You’re on your own. And you know what you know. And YOU are the one who’ll decide where to go!” - Dr. Seuss

Lastly, I would also like to share a few pieces of information regarding next school year. Beginning in the fall, a tutorial time of 25 minutes will be included in our middle school schedule. The school start and end times will not be changing, however this additional time will be for students to check in with adults. Also, our school improvement days for next will look a little different from previous years. Next year, our SIP days will be ½ days of attendance for students. At the middle school level, students will be released at 12:10 pm while teachers will be engaged in professional learning for the remainder of the day.

I wish each of you a safe and memorable summer season and I hope you are all able to capitalize on the “gift of additional time” that summer is able to provide many of us.

~Steve

Summer Reading

All incoming 6th, 7th, and 8th grade Thompson students are expected to self-select and read at least ONE book before school begins on August 14th, 2019. This book may be chosen from the book links provided below OR can be any book of a student’s choosing.

When students finish their book, they should access the TMS LRC website and either 1) print and complete the book log, OR 2) complete the Student Summer Reading google form. While reading ONE book is expected, we would love to see all Thompson students finish multiple books this summer. Students will participate in an activity related to their chosen book during the first week of class.
