LPS Elementary Specials
Meet the Team, Information & Grading
Jennifer Griffin - Art
Each year in art we focus on individual creativity, exploration, and excellence. Each grade level will explore art through their grade level TEKS and will produce projects that are specific to each grade level. Each year we will expound on the previous year’s TEKS and abilities. Some projects will be repeated to show growth over time and others will be new and unique.
All students will do well in art as long as they try to do their best and complete their projects each nine weeks. When students are finished with their work and I see that they have given great effort, students will have the opportunity to explore art stations and sharpen their saw based on their preferences. These stations include architecture, cursive handwriting, books about famous authors, sensory art, drawing, and free draw.
Feel free to send an old T- shirt with your child to protect their uniform during art class. The T-shirt can live in their backpack. Each student has their own sketchbook and these sketch books will come home with them at the end of the school year. We will have an art showcase each time there is a grade level musical performance. Please check the website for upcoming events.
Theresa Meacham - Music
Every child in my general music class will learn to be Tuneful, Beatful and Artful during their time with me. Science has proven that ALL children are born musical, but our society has moved from being a society of music producers towards being music consumers. My goal is that every child will leave my program believing that they themselves are musicians.
This year we will have a concert showcasing each grade level where the students will perform for their families their abilities to be Tuneful, Beatful and Artful. Please make plans to attend this special and fun event. I promise, the kids and I will work really hard to make this a meaningful experience for us all!

Sharla Reynolds - PE
My goal in physical education is for everyone to make healthier choices, feel successful when participating in a variety of activities, and most important HAVE FUN! At the elementary level certain skills are taught so that students will be able to pursue competitive sports as well as lifetime sports. Due to my passion for math, I also incorporate math facts into P.E. warm-ups at every grade level that I teach.
You can support your child’s success by making sure they come prepared to fully participate on P.E. days. Safe shoes are extremely important. They should have non-slip soles without heels or platforms. Shoes should fit securely on the feet (buckle, tie, etc.). Slip-on shoes are not appropriate for P.E. Students are not allowed to go barefoot for safety reasons. If your child does not have appropriate shoes, he/she will walk during class or another appropriate exercise will be assigned and if they come another day during the same 9 weeks with the wrong shoes, their grade will be lowered. Thank you for making a note of their P.E. day and helping to make sure they have the right shoes for P.E.
A parent note to excuse your child from P.E. will only be good for three days. After that I need a note from a doctor to excuse your child from class. I look forward to working with you to help your child reach their full potential!
Julie Grant - Spanish
My personal philosophy is that language learning should be fun, natural, and relevant. I ask that students fully participate in class and give it their best. We will not get it right every time and that is okay! A large part of the Spanish class is oral participation. Students are asked to repeat vocabulary after the teacher, try to say words on their own and participate in activities such as singing songs, role-playing, participating in conversations, asking and answering questions with their peers, and playing games—all in Spanish!
Topics covered throughout the year include basic greetings, calendar, colors, numbers, body parts, family, food, and more. At times, students will also connect what they are learning in Spanish to what they are learning in another class. They are also encouraged to use the vocabulary that we learn in Spanish class in their regular classes as appropriate. (ex. Spanish color words in art)
Language learning is a process which is greatly affected by how often it is used! Things your student can do at home to practice: use a Spanish app (Duolingo is a great one!), play games in Spanish on tablet or computer, listen to audio books in Spanish, watch cartoons or movie in Spanish, practice with Spanish speakers you encounter, practice vocabulary on Quizlet, Facetime with a friend to practice, and check out Spanish books from library. I have specific websites and vocabulary listed on the LPS website that you can refer to at home for practice.
If you are a Spanish speaker and would like to share with our students, please email me! I’d love to set up Spanish storytimes, have students learn about other cultures and countries and different holiday traditions, and just be able to hear different native speakers.

Library
During library time, students will learn and apply the 7 habits as they synergize and explore both indoor and outdoor games. Students will learn the proper way to treat books, how to shelve books, and how to be responsible with borrowed items. We look forward to a great year in library.
