Davenport's Weekly Update
Week of February 27th, 2022
MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
“If things start happening, don’t worry. Don’t stew. Just go right along and you’ll start happening too.” Dr. Seuss
As we move forward into the month of March, continue to MARCH on towards the goal of finishing the year strong. This month is often referred to as March Madness, in education, let's continue to be MAD about our love of reading, learning new lessons, being mindful, and kind to others. Continue to EMBRACE others as you want to be embraced.
In March we also acknowledge Women's History Month. Be thankful for the women who have birth us, taught us new skills, guided us in the journey of life, set positive examples for us, supported us, and who continue to care for us.
A late great woman once said, “You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You are able to say to yourself, ‘I lived through this horror. I can take the next thing that comes along.’ You must do the thing you think you cannot do.”
— Eleanor RooseveltHave a great weekend!

STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT
"READ ACROSS AMERICA" KICKS OFF IN THE LIBRARY A WEEK EARLY
Last week, Kindergarten teachers: Mrs. Smith, Ms. Whoy, Mrs. Tomlinson and Mrs. Blair collaborated with our Primary Media Specialist, Mrs. Cavileer to kick off "Read Across America". The students read the story, "The Lorax" in the classroom before coming to the media center to complete an engineering project based on the book. Students were introduced to the engineering design process and were asked to solve a problem. The students needed to save the Truffula tree by "growing" it as tall as they could before it "fell down". Students had a great time constructing their trees, all while learning about the process of engineering.
It's Electric!
GT students have been learning about electricity. They studied and experimented with both static and current electricity. Together, they created many different closed circuits including snap and sound, LED paper circuits and even human circuits with an energy ball! They also made a working light switch using materials that can be found in a classroom-- paper clips and brass fasteners!
CLIMATE & CULTURE
"Read Across America Week" Festivities
Mrs. Fiola's second grade class had special visitors during "Read Across America" week. Thank you Officer Spano and Mrs. White for being their guest readers!
Miss McGroarty's 1st grade students certainly enjoyed themselves during "Read Across America" week. They made oobleck, did Truffula tree math and had fun with goldfish for "One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish". They even had some special guest readers such as Mrs. White, and parents who signed up to live stream in to read to the class!
Book Tasting Cafe Comes to Davenport
The Davenport Primary Library was transformed into "The Book Tasting Cafe" this week. Our kindergarten and first grade students visited our Primary library to sample some popular genres and authors. They talked about restaurant manners, and students were given a set amount of time to "try" various books from "across the Davenport Library". Students then discussed which genres or authors were their favorite, or their least favorite and why. It was a great week and students were excited and energetic about "trying" new things!
Students Share Love of Reading in Storybook Character Parade
Davenport Complex held a Storybook Character Parade and Contest this week for "Read Across America". Students were able to dress as their favorite storybook characters and paraded through the halls of Davenport showing them off! Whether walking or waving at friends, students had a great time and lots of memories were made! What a great way to spread a love of books! (Some of our awesome finalists are shown below.)
