Retirement Celebration for Patricia Hendrix
Announcement!
The Center for Teaching Excellence (CTE)/Faculty Center would like to announce the retirement, on May 31, of Patricia Hendrix who, for the past fifteen years, has played an integral part in our mission to support our faculty and improve student learning. Trish, as we call her at the Faculty Center, joined the Eagle family in February 2002, first working for University Advancement. In 2005, she moved to the Center for Teaching Excellence (CTE) where she engaged with faculty and staff members, creating long lasting friendships and cherished memories.
During her time at Southern she accomplished one of her life-long dreams, getting her Bachelor’s Degree, and helped in many SoTL conferences, logged in countless workshops and webinars, and supported faculty and her colleagues in ways that surpassed mere professional obligations. For us at the Faculty Center, it’s been a privilege working with her, and so we would like to take the time to acknowledge her dedication and to celebrate with her this new milestone. For that, we call on anyone who would like to send her a card or a congratulatory email to forward them to the Faculty Center, P.O. Box 8143, Statesboro, GA 30460, or to phendrix@georgiasouthern.edu by May 27.
“It was my time working in the Faculty Center that taught me how important professional development is for the success of our professors and students. Georgia Southern truly has great people working together to make the student experience the best it can be. It’s been a pleasure to work in this department with this great team, and I will miss everyone but I am looking forward to the next chapter in my life: retirement.”
- Patricia Hendrix

ACUE Grant
The Faculty Center's efforts in leading GS's participation in a longitudinal research study funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) in partnership with ACUE - Association of College and University Educators is concluding its first phase. Over 70 faculty are wrapping up their modules and implementation reflections focused on equity-promoting teaching practices, strong student outcomes, and evidence-based active learning strategies. We would like to thank our facilitators, ACUE support, and especially our GS faculty for their commitment to this grant and to our mission of improving faculty and student classroom experience.
With this in mind, we would like to share this CUNY and ACUE Leaders Pen Op-ed on Power of Effective Teaching — At Scale “Faculty members should not be expected to solve the educational challenges we face on their own. We must invest in quality teaching across higher ed and equip faculty members with practices that can improve student learning, persistence, and achievement... System leaders have the power to set the tone and put forward the necessary resources and conditions that directly impact the classroom." In a joint op-ed published in Inside Higher Ed, titled "The Learning Imperative,"
Félix V. Matos Rodríguez, chancellor of the City University of New York (CUNY), and Penny MacCormack, chief academic officer of ACUE, make a powerful case for the impact and urgency of investing in quality teaching. Their op-ed describes how CUNY is making instructional excellence one of its signature issues. In particular, CUNY’s work with ACUE to credential hundreds of faculty in evidence-based teaching practices has been “instrumental in CUNY’s efforts.”
Book Feature: "The New Education"
“The New Education – How to Revolutionize the University to Prepare Students for a World in Flux” by Cathy N. Davidson
Author Cathy N. Davidson presents the broader historical background of American education as advanced by Harvard University president Charles Eliot in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Against this backdrop, Davidson introduces the college experience as a rite of passage of sorts, a quasi-mythical moment of intellectual and civic transformation. Pivotal to these transitions are students’ experiences in higher-ed, transformative lessons under the strain of politics and pressure. In this narrative, the author discusses how some of the nation’s most distinguished institutions modernized higher-ed in the past century, and how American academia today is transitioning into a new moment, one in which new technologies and pedagogical trends, along with world-wide challenges, push and pull departments, faculty, staff, and students into multiple directions.

Announcing an Advisory Model for Open Education in Promotion & Tenure Processes
University System of Georgia faculty are transforming their courses with the adoption, adaptation, and creation of open educational resources and the use of open pedagogy in their instruction. The benefits of this work generate student cost savings and, through both affordability and the innovative types of instruction that openness affords, advances educational equity. A critical part of sustaining this effort in higher education is recognizing the contributions by instructors who use, create, and improve OER as part of their professional work and recognizing how these contributions affect larger strategic priorities.
Affordable Learning Georgia’s Advisory Model for Open Education in Promotion and Tenure Processes is intended to guide faculty as they attempt to include their work with OER in their tenure and promotion (T&P) portfolios. This model is not a mandate for changes in local T&P policies, but it can serve as a guide for T&P committees who wish to add open education-related work into their standards.
Summer is right around the corner, and as campus life transitions into summer classes we are putting the finishing touches on brand new webinars and workshops for our Georgia Southern faculty. We’re offering workshops on technological tools and platforms, active learning strategies, online teaching tips, writing support, and general wellness in academia, among many others. Please take a moment to go over our summer offerings and consider signing up for them. We can’t wait to see you!
