Curriculum Corner
Hello Oak Grove Community,
While we know it’s important to read with your child everyday, it is just as important to talk about math daily, too. Personally, that’s also how I feel about science, and social issues, and music, and art… our dinner conversations are lengthy in our house. In fact, this morning on the way to daycare we were counting to 10. She keeps forgetting the number 4, sheesh! (Keep in mind, my daughter is two and she still wants to play along with my conversations, but I digress.)
Talking math with your students could be as easy as doing a count around in the car. Younger learners can count forward or backward by 1s which is foundational for beginning addition and subtraction. Older children can skip count forward or backward which is foundational for beginning multiplication and division. For example, if you skip count by three’s, you’d start with 3, your first passenger would say 6, followed by 9, etc… Furthermore, counting by various number values helps students see patterns in our number system as well as develop place value concepts.
If you are looking for math conversation starters, a great site is http://talkingmathwithkids.com/
which provides a blog for parents, ideas for starting math conversations with children as young as one and a Q/A for parents to share struggles and successes.
And let’s kick off this week with a joke, “Why was six afraid of seven? Because seven ate nine!”
Have a great week.
