Kindergarten Newsletter ACES
Week Of February 27th
Highlights from last week....
Welcome back!! We hope that you all had a restful and safe vacation. Our apologies for not submitting a newsletter as consistently as we would like. We are hoping to send them out weekly from this point forward.
Despite a mandatory state visit, 100th day and Valentine's day, we had a boat load of learning happening in our classes.
In Reader's Workshop, we focused on looking through the word and sound out the letters that we know. We also introduced "Flippy Dolphin", which is when you come to a tricky word, you can flip the vowel sound. Have them show you some of their strategies at home. They are really doing great! Please keep reading those books that we have been sending home weekly with your child. Also, please practice the sight words that went home. We will be sending home updated lists as they master the ones they are currently on. The more sight words they know, the better readers they will become!
In Writer's Workshop, we started our unit on writing a review. This is a tricky concept for our little learners, so we may be on this for a while! We will practice writing reviews on places we have been and toys or games.
In Math, we continued our unit on number bonds. I will attach a video to help you understand the math concept. We LOVE number bonds!!!
We also had our 100th day party and Valentine's day! Thank you for the goodies!
A peek at our learning this week....
We will continue to practice writing our first and last name on our work. Please reinforce this at home as well.

In phonics, we will focus on building words. We will be playing many word play games to help learn these skills. We will also work on rhyming words. Many of our friends are still having trouble with this, please rhyme whenever you can with your child so they can practice hearing and saying rhyming words.
In Math, we will be working on number bonds. This is a concept that we use to break numbers apart and put them together.
In Science, we will be working on the concept of push and pull. We will participate in several activities to reinforce this concept.

We FINALLY had our 100th day CAT PARTY!!! It was a blast. We actually had 100 stuffed cats!! Being a "crazy cat lady", I was in my GLORY!! Thank you for sending them in!! Valentine's day was great too! Thank you for sending in the treats, they were YUMMY! I am SO sorry, I neglected to send home the February book orders. With that being said, I will send home both February and March book orders on Monday. You can order from either one! Thank you for your support!
I also wanted to mention during my WINN group, we are working on STEM activities to help us with problem solving and design. Please note that this group is a mix of friend's from all of the kindergarten, not just my class. The week before we left we worked on building a home that would withstand the big bad wolf's breath. We will test our design out this week and make adjustments. I have attached a video of our friend's at work!

A note from Mrs. Melanson
Please continue to practice letter names and sight words with your children at home. Practicing tapping out short words and rhyming words is also a great way to help move them along in there reading.
As we settle back in to a regular schedule, and hopefully no more snow days, we will be doing more buddy reading and working with the teacher in small groups to master reading strategies to move us further along in our reading. I am so proud of all the children with their great gains in reading!
If you have a questions or concerns, please call or email me and I will get back to you as soon as possible. Again, thank you for all you do!
