Anglo European School
Bulletin - w/c 5th June 2022 - Week 1
Exchanges and International Visits
A very exciting early start for our Year 8 and 9 students over the last couple of days. We have said bon voyage, sichere reise, buon viaggio and viaje seguro to our Key Stage 3 students as they journey to France, Germany, Italy and Spain. We hope that they have an amazing time with their exchange students and embrace the culture, develop their language skills and learn to be open-minded and resilient.
Also off on their first Anglo international visit were our excited Year 7 students. Their residential visit marks the continuation of our long term partnership with Chateau Ebblinghem. We hope that they embrace this opportunity to discover new cultures, and hopefully, cuisine and make new friends and create memories that will last a lifetime.
Year 10 Work Experience
Our Year 10 students have taken some big steps towards the world of work this week, with over 220 students embarking on their first ever work placements. Since February, these students have worked hard to find themselves a placement and organise this invaluable experience of work related learning. We would like to ask these students to forward photos of themselves at their placements, which we can then share with the school community and also use to promote the work experience programme to next year's cohort. Please forward these to enterprise@aesessex.co.uk. A huge thank you to Mrs Sands and Mrs Tremain for all of their incredible hard work in helping students to organise their placements.
Chinese Embassy Visit
Some Key Stage 3 Chinese students were invited to the Chinese Embassy for the annual UK International Chinese Language Day. The students were treated to an opening exhibition of Chinese Kong Fu performances, before delving into a variety of interactive Chinese language and cultural workshops such as: calligraphy writing, velvet headwear making, paper folding, Peking Opera face mask painting, Kong Fu lessons, and mouth-blowing painting of plum flowers. They had a lot of fun, with some winning prizes in the various activities of the day. The day concluded with the Confucius teachers and students from all the schools joining in with a giant group dancing session – a wonderful day had by all!

Further Industrial Action
ASCL, the union which serve most leaders in education, is also running a formal ballot for national action. This ballot concerns the funding crisis in schools as a result of spiralling costs where there is little or no additional government funding, including pay awards which have not been fully funded previously.
These ballots may lead to further industrial action in the autumn term and we will keep parents abreast of any further developments. We have had some comments about strike days affecting the same curriculum days. This is beyond the control of the school and we are unable to influence which days the unions select on which to go on strike. As always we will work to minimise the impact for our students.
Language of the Month: German
German was the Language of the Month for May at the Anglo, and we celebrated with various quizzes, events and competitions.
We kicked off with a general knowledge quiz, which was won by 10A, 9P, 8T and 7P in their respective year groups. Years 8 and 9 later enjoyed a quickfire geography lesson during their Tutor Period, followed by another quiz on what they had learnt, this time won by 9M. Congratulations to them for their attentiveness and curiosity!
Food was the main focus of the month, though, first with the fantastic German menu provided by our kitchen team - thanks to them for the schnitzels, pretzels, traditional cabbage and especially the Haribo, which all went down a treat. Just a week later, our budding chefs and bakers raced to meet the deadline for the inaugural German Cooking Competition, which saw more than 25 entrants from across the school prepare traditional German starters, mains, desserts and snacks, and send in photographs for the judges. After a near-impossible task, they selected Idyll from 8A for first prize for her Black Forest gateau, with Anton from 7M in second place for his schnitzel and red cabbage, and Santiago from 7C coming in third with his homemade pretzels. Other highly recommended entries, pictured here, came from Ioana from 7E, Alexandra from 8A and Martha from 8N.
Thank you to everyone who contributed to the month, including teachers, support staff and our brilliant Sixth Form prefects, Sophie and Elsie.

Nearly New Uniform Appeal
Please can we remind you to consider donating nearly new uniform to the school. We would appreciate larger sizes for our current students and smaller sizes for our new Year 7s starting in September. Many families are struggling financially during this cost of living crisis and having this service available to students is a real life-line.
Thank you

SPORT
Cricket
Year 8 Cricket team lost by 14 runs in a very tight game. George batted outstandingly well to score 13 in just 3 overs. Ben and Aarav both took wickets and bowled exceptionally while Francesco was excellent as wicket keeper. Hard luck boys.
Thanks to the Ingatestone & Fryerning Cricket Club for allowing us to use their fabulous facilities to play these games, including an electronic scoreboard, the boys enjoyed this experience. One spectator watching the match said that "there was some great bowling and fielding on display, followed by some very impressive batting".
Karting
Congratulations to Year 7 student Matteo with the success he has achieved so far in outdoor karting. His home track is Brentwood Karting where he races every Sunday morning in their local league. In spring he became Clubman Champion. In addition, he races in the Rye House Championship, the Jenson Cup. This championship takes place once a month with the last race finishing in December. Matteo also participates in the Club 100, which is a nationwide Rotax Karting Championship.
