Jean Goujon

"Architect of the King"

History of the Renaissance Sculptor:

It is assumed that Goujon was born in 1510 some place in the country of France, where he spent most of his life. Little is known of how his younger years were spent, but Jean Goujon was influenced by the first school of Fontainebleu and by Cellini. He was trained by sculptors working in the lingering late Gothic tradition, who adopted new styles of artistry to work and teach with. He had no particular patrons.

Jean lived in Paris, France from 1544-1562 and worked on multiple parts of the Louvre, such as: -caryatid figures -panels -courtyard facade -Fontaine des Innocents

After a life of accomplishments, he left Paris for Bologna in 1563, only to die in 1569.

Little is known of the life of Goujon.

Fontaine des Innocents

Created between 1547 and 1550, this sculpture was built and moved a few times to get to its current position in the Louvre. It was made to commemorate the solemn royal entry of King Henry II into Paris. Many considered it "A masterpiece of French sculpture." The piece has beautiful individual relief sculptures of Nymphs on each side as the piece stands grand with water flowing down the bottom of it. I find this piece to be interesting because of the amount of class it has, as well a beauty. It is the oldest monumental fountain in Paris. The piece is closely linked to humanism by the way that it is perfectly crafted with even arches and the way that the Nymphs on each side represent "perfect" human beings.
