Principal's Message - Climate Walkout September 20th
Dear Arleta Families - On September 20th at 10:30, students for PPS will be joining students from across the globe to demand that our governments do something about our climate crisis.
Last year when students from PPS joined the climate walkout, PPS sent out the following message:
* We recognize the right of students to demonstrate in support of their concerns. However, our expectation is that students remain safely in school actively engaged in their classes.
* Students will be told to stay in school and those who do choose to walkout will be marked as absent.
* Staff will not be participating in any walkout. Students leaving school assume responsibility for their own safety. Families releasing their students for participation in a walkout assume responsibility for their safety.
* We do encourage students to express their concerns through discussions, research, testimony, lobbying, petitions and demonstrations outside the school day. Teacher facilitated in-class discussions may also be useful.
We are waiting on messaging from PPS Central Office regarding the September 20 walkout. Last year PPS staff were at the rally location, but please know that this does not ensure anyones safety as it is very hard to keep track of students in a crowd of thousands.
I would encourage you to discuss participating in any walkout as a family and prepare students for the experience, by sharing the challenges of being in a large crowd and your expectations.
I support student voice and I look forward to finding ways to support students advocating for themselves, their community and their future.
If you have questions, concerns or thoughts, please text or call 971-347-4566 or email dkruger@pps.net
Sincerely, Diana

VOLUNTEERS MAKE ARLETA GREAT!
Our school welcomes the support of parent and community volunteers! To maintain a safe environment for students, staff and our community, Portland Public Schools requires background checks on volunteers who may have direct, unsupervised contact with students every three years. If you have an interest in volunteering, such as helping in your student’s class or chaperoning a field trip, it only takes a minute to fill out the short application form on the PPS website. There is currently a backlog of requests, so please get your application in as soon as possible. Click the button below to start the short application.
