Updates from Fifth Grade

September 19th-23rd, 2016

Dear Families

This week will be filled with excitement as we finish up our Notion of Motion LDC! I hope your children have been telling you about their challenge to create a marble roller coaster. I cannot wait to see their final designs Wednesday and to know who will represent us at the school Science Olympics!

I also wanted to thank each of you for making Boosterthon so successful for our class this year! The students are so excited that we were able to raise over $30 per lap! They earned themselves a lot of class prizes. We will be scheduling a few fun activities, like crazy sock day, hat day, 30 minutes of device time, and an extra 15 minutes of teacher directed PE.

Coming Up This Week

This week in math we will be continuing to grow our knowledge of division. Topics covered this week will include:

  • Partial Quotients
  • Adjusting Quotients
  • Problem Solving with Division
  • Interpreting Remainders

Heads up- We will be testing on Unit 2 Division of Whole Numbers Monday, September 26th.

We will be wrapping up our Notion of Motion LDC this Wednesday. In order to complete the LDC we are rearranging our usual STEM Fair lesson day. This week we will be talking about writing our Purpose and Hypothesis on Thursday. I collected most students' STEM Fair folders on Friday and hope to continue checking on students' updates to the folders throughout the week. On Friday, we will be looking back at the knowledge we have gained about the forms of energy. We will be testing next week on Chapter 7, but a day has not yet been selected.

Social Studies

In Social Studies we will begin looking at geography. We will be connecting this to our STEM Unit on structure as well with the connections to what structures are put in place that allow us to describe locations. We will be focusing on the world in spatial terms and the geography of the United States this week.

On Monday we will be making up the Florida Assessment for Instruction in Reading (FAIR) that was rescheduled due to the weather days. This week in ELA we will also be wrapping up our LDC work on Wednesday. I am looking forward to seeing students' summaries of their learning and cannot wait for them to share these with you! Thursday and Friday we will shift gears, taking a break from informational text to enjoy a nice realistic fiction read to review analyzing character traits and theme, as well as learn about idioms.
