Principal's Message
A few notes:
- I really don't like nagging people. Some are receiving several emails from me lately. The emails that begin with "if you are receiving this message..." it was meant for you specifically. Please take a look at it. Typically, we need you to respond or do something right away.
- Please consider sending a change of clothes to school. When it's wet outside and kids play at recess, sometimes clothes need a change, and we have only a limited supply.
- No snow pants = no playing in the snow at recess.
- Please help our students and crossing guards stay safe! There is no student drop off on Lakewood Creek Drive. Please drive SLOWLY, watch for crossing guards, and stop completely at the crosswalks until ALL students are across ALL crosswalks.

That's AVID! Family - School Connection
"The Binder" is only one small part of AVID. It's the one parents are most likely to see, so some think that's all it is. At the beginning of the year, we focus on Organization and learning organizational strategies. One way to organize is "The Binder." We are implementing AVID schoolwide this year, kindergarten through 5th grade! While primary grades have a folder instead of a binder, the strategies are similar. We color code items, keep frequently needed items handy, sort pages in proper places, and discuss what a "Successful Student" looks like.
Help your child organize things around the house to practice the strategy. Organize the shopping list by aisle. Alphabetize the spice rack. Color code the closet. Discuss how items are organized in day-to-day life, outside of school.
Early Childhood Make Up Days
Schoolwide Second Step Focus
This week and next, your child should learn how to:
- Kindergarten: be able to give at least one example of a kind act, and to give at least one reason why they think kind acts are important.
- 1st Grade: be able to describe how kind acts can help people feel good, and will be able to demonstrate two kind acts: asking, “Are you okay?” and offering their company.
- 2nd Grade: be able to describe how empathy leads to an act of kindness in a given scenario, and will be able to describe how empathy has led them to show kindness to others.
- 3rd Grade: be able to identify kind acts that can build a new friendship, and will be able to identify kind acts that can make existing friendships stronger.
- 4th Grade: be able to explain different points of view presented in a given situation, and will be able to generate questions a person could ask to better understand someone’s point of view when it’s hard to empathize.
- 5th Grade: be able to describe how people used empathy to identify a community problem and a way to address it, and will be able to use empathy to identify problems in their community and the people affected.

Snow/Emergency Day Reminder
Parents/Guardians,
Snow/Emergency Day work packets have been sent home and are available in your child's Google Classroom. In the event the school would need to close for snow/emergencies, the school day will run from 9:00am to 2:00pm. Teachers will be available by phone, email, and live in their Google Meets from: 9-9:30am, 11:30am-12pm and 1:30-2pm to support and answer any questions a child might have.
Student attendance is required for a snow/emergency day. The second page of each packet will be collected by the classroom teacher when school reopens. The students only need to bring THAT page back filled out by the parent. They do not need to bring the whole packet back to school. Please keep it in a safe place at home. We will be using this as our instructional tool for our snow/emergency days.
Please know that all elementary schools are following this same procedure. If you have any questions please email your classroom teacher for clarification.
Thank you.
