Washington Elementary
January 25, 2019
Grades 1, 3, 5 Music Program
Students in grades 1, 3, 5 will present "Styles of American Music" celebrating folk, jazz and blues, lullabies, broadway and show tunes. All students are working hard to learn music that represents many aspects of our American music culture. We invite our Washington families to join us. The program will be Tuesday, February 26 at 9:30 am and 1:00 pm in the Washington gym.
Kindergarten, 2nd and 4th grade classes will present music “informances” during their regular music class on April 10, 11, 12, 15 or 16. Informances allow parents to see a variety of music skills and activities children learn in weekly music classes. More detailed information with exact days and times will be sent home in March.

Greetings from the Music Room!
My name is David Schmitt and I have been the substitute Music Teacher while Mrs. Leah Ries has been away. While there are only a few short weeks remaining until Mrs. Ries returns, learners have been developing their ability to create and express music through instrumental work, movement, and body awareness. Please let me know if there is anything I can do to better support your student in learning. It has been a pleasure being part of the community here at Washington.
With gratitude,
David Schmitt

You can help raise money for Washington..
It’s easy to support your school with items you already use in your home or receipts from stores you already patronize! Feel free to send any of the following to school with your student.
There are drawers in the hallway next to the lost and found to drop any of them off.
Each box top through Box Tops for Education is worth 10 cents. If each student turned in just 20 box tops during the year the school would receive around $800. Watch for Bonus Tops on participating products or as a coupon from your store purchase. Go to www.boxtops4education.com to sign up, enter sweepstakes and to see a list of the participating products. Box tops do expire so be sure to turn them in on time!
Through Kwik Trip’s Milk Moola program, each milk/juice cap and bag top are worth 5 cents. Please remember to rinse the caps and bag tops before turning them in.
Save your Hy-Vee receipts from both Mankato locations and they will donate $1 for every $150 spent through the Hy-Vee Kash 4 Kids program. The receipts must be dated during the current school year(Sept. 2018- May 2019) to qualify. Every little bit will add-up!
We have set up our PTO as an organization you can support through AmazonSmile. Once you select us as an organization to support, we will receive 0.5% of the price of your eligible smile.amazon.compurchases.

Meeting Minutes 1/7/2018
Meeting Attendees: Casey Neitzel, Eileen Campbell, Cherise Barker, Shane Drahota, Jennifer Brunz, Hilary Kent, Shane Baier, Becca Peterson, Nathan Meeling, Alison Carlson, Diane Winegar
December Meeting Minutes Approved: Jennifer (1) Diane (2)
Treasurers Report: We funded the 2nd grade busing request, the Reading Rocks! DJ expense, food items for the upcoming movie night, and purchased a microwave for the teachers lounge.
Teachers Report: There was discussion about possibly combining Open House and the Welcome Back picnic next year. Open House currently does not have a lot of draw and we have multiple events during the fall we could combine. Should we coordinate the events? Staff is going to ask other schools to see what they have done. Can teachers do a Friday night event per their contract? More discussion about this at a later date.
Principals Report: We just got word tonight that Sherri Allen is retiring at the end of this school year. This is a big deal to our district and we look forward to seeing what the future brings. Shane did talk to the kitchen staff about the potential snack cart and Sam Flowers is going to reach out to other kitchens to check out the logistics. From what Shane learned from calling Hoover and Monroe, the snack cart was approached as everyone having access to it. Their PTO either set aside funds for low income students, gave other families the chance to give more, or had a scholarship for the snack program. Payment plans were also provided and it isn’t a huge burden. 90% of Monroe participates. More information to come in February as far as what it will look like at Washington at each grade level.
Request for Funding: Stacey Smith’s request for science funding to Kennedy was already approved.
Committee Reports: Fundraising: Kwik Trip is discontinuing its Milk Moola program in March. We need to round up and submit whatever we currently have. Possible other options there are scrip or car washes. Coke also has a program where families can donate their codes to benefit our school. Next restaurant night is going to be Dairy Queen in April. Barnes and Noble fundraiser is set for March 2nd, tentatively from 12-4pm. We are working with teachers to coordinate a draw for families to come, such as a Readers Theater or various teachers reading. Bookfair: Next bookfair is 2/7 on Reading Night. Bookfair will run from 5:30-7:30 and Reading Night from 6-7:30. Playground: We are still planning on applying for the Bremer Grant in April and the Kaboom Grant coming up. Climbing wall would be moved in order to accommodate the spiderweb. Spiderweb visual should be going up shortly in the hall. Yearbook: February 15th due date for $10 orders. After that, price will increase and there will be limited quantities available. Walk-A-Thon incentives need to be narrowed down by February and the envelopes will need to be made up soon. Some of the teacher incentives were time sucking and we need to talk with Stacie Smith to make sure they aren’t such a burden this year.
New Business: Family Movie Night is January 11th. Eileen and Diane doing popcorn and snacks. Going to test equipment on Wednesday to ensure it works. Plans to setup boundaries and walkways were discussed. Doors open at 6pm with movie starting at 6:30pm. Bookfair chair still needed.
Motion to Adjourn: Casey (1) Becca (2)
